Chapter 1 ~ As it wasPhilomena Pan sits beneath the graceful sweep of an old willow tree, the long, tendril-like branches dipping low enough to offer her a secluded canopy. The soft rustle of leaves overhead mingles with the distant chatter of the courtyard, creating a soothing ambiance that makes it easy for her to lose herself in the moment. The grass beneath her is cool and plush, her back comfortably resting against the tree's sturdy trunk as her legs stretched out lazily in front of her.
In her lap lays a book—one of those old, leather-bound volumes she'd taken from the school library, the kind that smelled faintly of parchment and time. The pages are spread open, but her eyes barely skim the words. Instead, she finds herself glancing up now and again, her gaze drifting toward Mal, Evie, Carlos and Jay as they make their way across the courtyard.
From beneath the cover of the willow branches, Phina watches them with a quiet smile, her gaze soft. She supposed she feels like an outsider, in a way—still not entirely used to being part of their world—but she finds a strange sense of peace just observing them. They had become her friends, after all, and even if she wasn't always in the center of their whirlwind, she knew she belonged with them.
She watches Jay who walks a few steps ahead of their small group. A series of giggles follow him as girls say "hi" with red faces and hopeful, shy smiles. He says nothing as he passes but she notices his cocky grin.
She supposes it is because cotillion is just 3 days away and they all want to be the girl that Jay would have on his arm for the evening. People got so desperate when it came to cotillion, she thinks with a sigh.
She knows Jay isn't going to take anyone anyway, he'd expressed quite clearly that he was planning on dancing with a fair share of girls and 'taking just one would ruin too many opportunities' for him. She'd rolled her eyes at the time.
Carlos follows closely behind. He looks to be thinking about something as he pays no mind to anything going on around him.
Evie and Mal are there too, walking side by side. Evie is chatting away like she so often does, most likely telling Mal about some dresses she was planning to make and who could he lucky enough to snag her next free dress making appointment. Mal nods along dutifully but Phina can tell she isn't really listening.
The newly blonde girl had been so stressed lately with everything from her relationship with Ben to the paparazzi that was constantly hounding her. The poor girl needed a break but no one really realised.
Well, no one except Philomena.
It seemed as though Mal had sensed the girls gaze as she looks to her left to see Philomena looking at her over the top of her open book. Mal waves with a small smile and Philomena waves back lazily.
She closes her book and picks herself up off of the grass to walk over to greet her friends who had all stopped to talk to Jane.
"Hi Phina" Evie grins excitedly, ever the ray of sunshine. Phina smiles back.
