Manwich, Massachusetts
Emily was getting ready for her cookout. She was putting the charcoal on the grill. Sweat trickled down her face in the steamy 90 degree weather. Her friends, Riley, Jayden, and Gwendolyn would be arriving any minute.
Her buddies arrived, and sat down in their chairs in the backyard. Riley got out a can of Sprite out of the cooler. Emily put the hot dogs and burgers on the grill. A bunch of flies were buzzing about, annoying her friends.
"Shoo, go away!" said Gwendolyn, swatting her hand at the flies.
The food was now ready, and everyone got what they wanted. However, Emily got a phone call. Her expression went from happy to sad. She ended the phone conversation. Her brother, Dan told her some sad news.
Her mother died.
