"What is it?" I asked, poised and ready to either attack or flee upon Legolas' word.

His eyes widened. "Crebain from Dunland!!"

The instant those words flew from his mouth, all the warriors began to hastily clear up camp and direct hobbits into hiding.

Crebain were basically crows, but Saruman, one of Gandalf's wizard friends who had sided with Sauron, was known for using Crebain as spies.

Saruman could understand the language of the Crebain, so they were useful. We could do nothing but hide from them and hope that they did not see us.

The instant that all of us had hidden, the Crebain began to swarm around the rocky ruin, squawking the whole time.
They circled and turned back south, back towards Isengard, which was Saruman's lair, that was located just past the Gap of Rohan.

The moment they were gone, Gandalf spoke of his disgust, in his own way. "The way south is being watched. We must take the Pass of Caradhras."

Great.

Taking the Pass meant that we would have to backtrack and then begin to climb up the Misty Mountains and go over them. Gandalf really was avoiding Moria.

We packed up and headed out.
