Adina's POV

"Youre gonna be alright home alone, mama?" I asked.

"Yes, Dina. You ask me every time you leave. This is the last time I'm gonna tell you—I'm gonna be okay, baby. I promise," my mama chuckled.

"I knowww, I knoww. I just wanna make sure you don't get hurt. Be grateful, guh," I playfully rolled my eyes at her.

"I'm more than grateful, Dina baby. But I promise I'm gonna be alright."

"Aight, then." I gave my mama a hug.

"Love you, D."

"Love ya."

I was finna head to Deshaun's house for a minute.

I'd been inside for daysss studying, hanging out with Angelo, and takin' care of my mama.

Angelo had been coming over to my house a lot more than just to help me and give me my school work.

I felt like I might be developing feelings for Angelo. I ain't even gon hold you.

I mean, he's cute, responsible, and super mature for his age, unlike Marshall.

He's funny, and he's smart.

I mean like, this guy is so on top of his game, especially for being at 16!

I felt like we had so much in common.

Unlike me and Marshall.

I was just waiting for Angelo to ask me out or do something.

Even my mama liked him.

But it was just a matter of time...

Pulling up to Deshaun's house, I didn't see his car here, but he'd been talking about taking it to the shop since it's having problems. So maybe he is home, and his car's just in the shop. I didn't wanna just assume that he's not here. I'm tryna hang out with my nigga for the little time I can leave my mama home alone.

I knocked on his front door a couple of times. The brisk cold air felt real thin. I loved this time of the year though...I'd choose cold over hot any day.

The front door swung open.

Oh god.

Seeing who it is, my lips formed into a tight-lipped smile. Immediately turning around, but he grabbed my arm, making me face him.

"Uh uh. Hell no. Come inside." He pulled me inside.

"Where's Deshaun at, dude?" I pulled my arm away from him.

I thought this motherfucker was at his lil girlfriend's house.

"He ain't here right now."

"Then where the hell is he?"

"Ion know, Adina. He just said he was gon' be right back. He literally just left the crib."

"Okay, then I'ma come back late—"

"No," Marshall cut me off.

"What?"

"No," he spoke slightly louder than the first time.

"How the hell is you gonna tell me whether I can leave or not. I don't wanna be around you right now."

"Why?"

"Fuck you mean why?! You keep disrespecting me, my nigga!"

"Yo,...I'm sorry," Marshall's voice spoke almost convincingly genuinely, as if he genuinely felt bad.
