SERRA

Today was my sister's birthday.

Not that she was a great one anyway, but I decided to congratulate her.

Though, after I got my hands on some food.

She was hosting a masquerade party— black card style, courtesy of her rich boyfriend.

The dating pool in higher society came with its perks. And if there was one thing my sister truly loved about her boyfriend, it wouldn't be his perky ass.

No. The only meaning of the word she was interested in was the kind that involved status and money.

Though... she must be blind, because even I had to admit he had a nice and perky ass. I wonder if he would share his workout routine with me...

Beside the point.

My sister was a power and money hungry bitch in sheep's clothing, and I couldn't say I don't know how she became this way.

Growing up an orphan and then getting kicked to the curb by your only adoptive parents for something beyond your control may do that to you.

Then again, we lived through most of the same experiences and I wasn't an insatiable bitch.

While I can see how she uses some of the money she poaches to house us, on the other hand, it didn't make sense why she was so desperate to be the big bad bitch of high society.

Not to mention, she used the self-appointed status to huff and puff and blow your self esteem to the ground.

It seemed like shame and insecurity were her foods of choice, because she certainly didn't eat a lot else in favor of maintaining her figure.

So in essence, I guess you could say the big bad bitch wasn't interested in pigs — and I meant that literally cause the bitch couldn't stand bacon — or any food actually, but was rather hungry for everything else but.

Thankfully, this didn't create an issue for my conscience as her sister, considering the bigger picture.

The bigger picture being that her boyfriend was only interested in the certain assets she provided— just like she was with his.

So, this was typical for her: seducing and cycling through lovers.

And it helped that most of these relationships were not of the used and user nature.

Instead, they used each other, and they were damn happy for it too.

Though of course, sometimes I couldn't help but feel bad for the exceptions. The unique few who were just looking for someone to love and to love them; the unlucky ones who get ensnared by her.

And what really sucks though, was that I could relate. My love life was a shit show.

I mean.. it's not like I ask for anything more than love... besides food and tolerating my bitchy attitude....

Okay, so yeah.. I was a bitch too, but I wasn't the same breed of bitch she was so...

Back to the present.

I make my way around the party, my heels against the floor making a sound that only I could find satisfying but cringe at.

I was clad head to toe: from my lacy mask, my glittering dark red bodycon dress —that did not flatter me the same way they do my sister— and black heels.

The dress did me (un)justice.

Comparing myself in it to my sister would be like comparing a really thin celery stick to two ridiculously large oranges stacked on top of one another— bad analogy, I know— and I was the celery stick in this unfortunate reality.

Oh, how reality was the gift that just kept on giving.

Its most recent gift to me was the passing sight of a guy leaning against the wall, trying hard to pull off a cool pose.

He had his back and one of his feet on the wall with the other on the ground, and somehow he fucked the pose up with shoulders almost to his ears and his back hunched. I almost couldn't see if the guy even had a neck at all.

But oh no.

That wasn't the worst part.

The worst part was the way his eye kept twitching while trying to do what I could only assume was a wink at a busty blonde across the room.

His weird twitching made him look like he was having a seizure and all the while he had this weird smile on his face aimed at the blonde

And... it seems the girl made the same comparison I did, because she gave him a panicked look and turned to get lost in the crowd in the room.

I made sure to give him a wide berth so as not to make the same mistake of getting his attention as I made my way to a table filled with finger foods and refreshments.

Every party's holy grail.

I couldn't contain my glee as I walked to the table.

Me and this table of food— had an ongoing relationship that put the rest my love life to shame.

However, it seemed like god decided this relationship was going too easy.

Because on my way, I fell.

I fell.

On air, dammit.

And someone was unlucky enough to be under me when I did.

"Hey watch it-"

The words were cut off as the unlucky stranger met my eyes.

My breath caught.

He was beautiful.

Even beneath the mask he was wearing.

He had a mixture of strong and delicate features. A square shaped  face with a strong jawline, offset by his full lips.

His large almond eyes burned through the very layers of my being, starting from my flesh to the very core of my soul.

And he exuded an elegance which stemmed not only from his posture, but of his slightly upturned nose— with a high nose bridge that made it seem like he was looking down on me.

He was everything refined and sophisticated; even with the multiple silver ear pieces he had.

I couldn't help but notice his face was absurdly unblemished and symmetrical, so much so, that I could've sworn he wasn't actually real.

With me staring back at him, I could have just imagined it, but his eyes shone with recognition for a brief moment. Then he used the grip he had gotten on my upper arms from the fall to steady me.

"Hey there sweetheart, you okay?"
