Day 10: Waiting for the Other

One morning, she discovered that Gabriel had fallen asleep in her room again, haphazardly settled on top of the blanket. One of the books he'd been studying lay open, upside down by his face. His crooked glasses still sat on his nose.

She eased them from his face, using the edge of her shirt to clean them.

Instead of waking him, she waited. His peaceful expression made her smile; he so rarely looked this calm anymore.

The scene would've felt almost normal, if not for the constant burning in her lungs.

Nathalie swept a hand over the hair on his forehead, continuing to wait. She would always wait for him.
