The following day came early, and I couldn't help but lie in bed and listen to the other girls sleep, staring at nothing but darkness.

My whole body was relaxed while I laid there, trying but failing to figure out what had woken me up and wondering if I should go back to sleep before my alarm woke me up for the day ahead.

I bit back a small sigh of annoyance while I closed my eyes, yawning slightly before I twisted around and tried to do just that, even though it didn't work.

My mind wandered over to the men that I had not seen in a while, and I couldn't help but pray that they were safe and well and one day I would be able to "see" them again.

Could Fate know where they are? I asked, making a mental note to ask her when we went to school today. Are they even alive?

I bit back a small groan and turned the other way while I opened my eyes again, feeling slightly annoyed.

Why can't I go to sleep again? I silently wondered while I closed my eyes again, pursing my lips in annoyance. I sighed and turned the other way, praying that my mind would shut off again so that I could, even though I had no idea how many hours I had left until I had to wake up. What is happening to me?

There was a small bit of noise outside of my room, interrupting my concentration from listening to the girls breathing while they slept, and I opened my eyes again.

Again, there was another small bit of noise outside of my room before there was a pause outside of my bedroom door.

I stayed silent and closed my eyes again, pretending to be asleep again. My whole body was tense, and I waited for them to walk away again, but they didn't.

Finally, there was a small knock on my door, not waking the others, not even Mandy. There was another knock on my door again before they opened my door slowly and quietly as if not to wake the others in the room. "Carely?" John asked, his voice barely above a whisper. "Are you awake?"

I bit back a small sigh before I slowly nodded, opening my eyes while I sat up in bed and faced him. "Yes," I said, my voice barely above a whisper as well. "What is it? Are you ok? Is everything all right?"

My adopted father chuckled softly, and I had a feeling that he nodded in confirmation. "Yes," he vocalized out loud as if he remembered that I couldn't see him. "Come on. I want to take you somewhere."

The girls...

I hesitated and grabbed my blankets tighter, and I stayed seated in my new bed. My whole body grew tense while I became worried about the girls that were under my care.

"The girls are going to be fine, Carley," he said softly, and he moved to the side somehow as if he knew what I was thinking. "No one will get to them while they are here. I promise."

I hesitated again before I slowly nodded, relenting. "Ok," I whispered. I took the blankets off of me and twisted around until I was seated on the edge of the bed when someone shifted behind me.

I paused and cocked my head, waiting for the person to settle before I got out of bed and reached for my staff that was near the wall beside my bed.

John watched me grab my staff and stayed put. He didn't say a word, and I had a feeling that he wanted to make sure that I was safe while I made my way to the door.

When I reached him, I paused and cocked my head while I stared at him with unseeing eyes. "Can you go first so that I can close the door behind me, please?" I asked my voice barely above a whisper. "I don't want to accidentally hit you with my staff."
