Chapter thirty nine

(Y/n)'s pov:

Neji was taken to the infirmary soon after Naruto won, and his friends tackled him a hug of course.

I hugged him too, and congratulated him as he laughed and cheered.

Sasuke was still nowhere to be seen, and the people started yelling after to start the second match. Was it Sasuke's? Hayate was slow on purpose.

"He's definitely going to be here, believe it." Naruto spoke glancing at Gaara who was a few feet away from us.

He glanced right back at him.

Naruto hardened his eyes.

He's the only one who is not afraid of Gaara besides me. Naruto is Naruto and I'm not afraid because I know his past. Otherwise, maybe I'd probably be scared too.

"Listen everyone." Hayate's voice broke the booing noise the crowd was making. "One of the competitors from the next battle has not arrived yet. So we're going to postpone this match briefly and simply jump ahead to the battle what would have followed this one."

That meant Sasuke wasn't disqualafied. His match was just put to be later on.

Naruto let out a heavy breath. "That's good."

"Hey, wait a second. That means my match is one more closer." Shikamaru spoke as if he couldn't believe it.

"(Y/n) and Kankuro. Come down."

I looked down at the arena where Hayate already had his eyes on me. I noticed his fingers crossing to wish me good luck.

Then I looked at Kankuro.

He was gritting his teeth, staring at one point before he turned his head to look at me.

Something softened in his expression as he fisted his hands. It was like he was frustrated.

"I withdraw."

"What?" The crowd gasped and I turned my whole body to Kankuro. "What do you mean you withdraw?"

"What did ya' say? What the-" Haku was the one to shut Naruto up and hold him down before he would have attacked Kankuro.

I walked towards him, feeling... I don't know how. Angry maybe. Dissapointed. "I wasn't training all this time for you to just 'withdraw'."

I glared at him, and he swallowed keeping his eyes on me.

What is he thinking? I knew he will withdraw with the match he would have had with Shino but I tought...

"You didn't come here all the way from the damned sand village so you could stand there and do nothing." I jabbed a finger at his shoulder and I felt a hand on mine.

I ignored it.

"You want to be a ninja or a housewife? If you want to be who you imagined always becoming then get your ass down there and fight me like a man."

I was staring in his soul but I could care less. Sasuke needed time to get here. What is something changed in the timeline and he'll be late?

It was unlikely... but...

Everyone was quiet around us and the hand on my shoulder tightened slightly.

"(Y/n), leave it. Come on." His voice was low and smooth as he pulled me back from Kankuro, but I kept my eyes on him.

"I'm sorry, (Y/n)." He said.

Unfuckingbelievable.

I scoffed and turned, seeing Shikamaru lead me back to our small group.
