Without studying the speech patterns of other time periods for hours on end, I have found my own way to write fancily when a story calls for it (such as in certain Phantom of the Opera fanfictions). I shall share my methods below, in a convenient list. Please note that this is my method, and it may or may not be accurate, and it may or may not help you.
- Imagine all of your fancy writing is being said in a stereotypical British accent. Now, I normally frown upon stereotypes, however I find this method to be quite helpful. Somehow, certain words do not sound quite right (depending on the context) in this stereotypical accent, therefore they should not be used in your fancy writing. That is my basic rule of thumb.
- Use words and wording that have long since gone out of use. Most people today do not use the words "shan't" or "shall" very often, and instead will use the words "will" or "won't". Instead of "was it not your intention", people today say "it wasn't your intention". "Needn't" is also a very good word to use instead of "don't have to" depending on the context. Big words never hurt either, so long as they are not used too often or utterly confusing. No reader wants to have to use a dictionary every third word.
- Use basic grammar. If you are trying to write fancily, basic grammar is a must. You needn't be an English Major, but you must have a basic understanding of English grammar rules.
- Avoid modern slang terms.
- Do not always use contractions. Now, I am not telling you to avoid them like the plague, but do not use them every single time the opportunity comes up. If you use too many, as my Language Arts teacher says, your writing may seem lazy (which is not fancy). If you do not use them at all, it can make your writing seem robotic (which isn't fancy either). Use them only when the moment seems right,
- Use common sense. If your writing sounds fancy, go for it. If it does not, perhaps you would like to reword it.
