Chapter 1

A long time ago, in a small town in Arizona, there were two women named Nicole and Lindsay. They were looking through the market. Nicole was looking for a sword for protection. They were preparing for a journey.

It was midday, but they were tired, so they decided to look for a place to stay. They came across the first house and knocked on the door.

"May I help you ladies?" a man asked when he answered.

"We were wondering if you could spare some food," Nicole replied.

"I don't know.. If you haven't noticed, food has been running scarce because of this drought," the man replied.

"Claud," a woman's voice said from inside the house," it's been so long since we had guests. Let them in"

Nicole and Lindsay walked in the house. It was nice inside, it had hardwood floors and paneled walls. The front door led into a kitchen with a table with six chairs. A crystal chandelier hung from the ceiling. There were two doors that they assumed led to bedrooms, and an open door which led to the bathroom.

"This is my wife, Tracy," Claud said.

Tracy was a woman with long brown hair that was pinned up in a bun. She wore a blue and white long sleeved dress and was about 5' 7". Nicole and Lindsay thought she might be about 30. She was boiling water for tea.

"I see you are preparing for something," Tracy said looking over at Nicole's sword.

"Yes, we were going to try to look for the legendary crystal fragment of Sterm," Lindsay replied.

"It doesn't exist. There's no point in looking," Claud said.

"Claud, you can't tell them that. You know its not true," Tracy said in return," what is your purpose of trying to find it?"

"If we find it, we'll trade it and get enough money to bring the rest of our family to the US and start our business here," Lindsay said.

Tracy nodded and placed a cup of mint tea in front of Lindsay, Nicole, and Claud. They all sat in silence, drinking tea. Suddenly, the silence was broken by a high squealing sound.

"What's that?" Nicole asked, alarmed.

"The local authorities. Lone women aren't allowed. Lone people in general aren't allowed in this town. Where have you been staying?" Tracy asked.

"On the outskirts," replied Nicole.

The door opened and a man stepped through. Nicole and Lindsay hid under the table.

"How can I help you officer?" Claud asked.

"Two lone women were spotted here. Have you seen them?" the officer asked.

"No sir. We haven't," Claud lied, as Tracy led Nicole and Lindsay out the back door.

Nicole and Lindsay waved goodbye as they ran away. They saw big metal boxes with wheels. They were white with a black stripe and a gold strip. In big letters, it said "police" on the side. An officer and some dogs got out. But they weren't safe yet. They heard the dogs bark at them. The dogs began to chase Nicole and Lindsay.

"What now?!" asked Lindsay.

"We run. The nearest town isn't far away," Nicole replied.

So they ran, until they came to the next town. It was bigger than they thought- and more modern too.

"Woah... look at those buildings!" Lindsay exclaimed.

"We'd better send the letter to father saying we don't need the money anymore...," Nicole said.

"Right," Lindsay replied.

Then they set off into the city. They came across people in weird clothes and buildings stretching into the sky. It was all so weird.
