Chapter 2:
Katherine

The angel left the room and Katherine sank to the floor.

Every part of her childhood had been about protecting herself against monsters. She’d lived in fear for so long and had overcome it by training herself, by learning how to fight the creatures that go bump in the night.

Now there was a new creature. One she had never needed to prepare for ever. Now, one wanted her dead and another was protecting her.

She was lost; she felt her whole world crumbling around her.

“Get a hold of yourself!” She whispered furiously. She was a hunter; she couldn’t get scared because some humans with wings appeared!

“Are you coming?” Gabriel called from the bottom of the stairs.

She hesitated, was she supposed to go with the angel or stay here and chance that Lucifer may return? Either way she was going with a creature she was trained to kill.

But, if she didn’t follow her angel she could die. Plus she was beginning to feel hungry again. Yogurt just wasn’t going to cut it. Gabriel was right about one thing, a burger did sound really good right now.

Taking one look at her overturned room she left and met the angel at the bottom of the stairs.

“Fine, but you’re buying!” She said walking past him.

He laughed “I would except I’m broke. Angels don’t really carry around money.”

Katherine couldn’t help but crack a smile. He may be an angel and supernatural creature but at least he had a sense of humour.

“Well come on then!” She called back and opened the door to find him already standing there.

“No, you come on.” He replied with a playful grin that she was finding only he could truly do. And despite her resistance her smile became wider.

Locking the door behind her she stated “We can walk there.”

“Better yet, we can fly there.” He told her with a mischievous smile.

He took her hand and she felt herself become surrounded by a white light. She closed her eyes in fear feeling the world slip away around her. When she once again opened her eyes they were in an alleyway behind the theater.

She looked around and then stared at the angel who was smiling smugly.

“Show off!” She teased.

He shrugged and gave a mock bow. “Lead the way.”

Katherine shook her head walking in the direction of the nearest restaurant, ‘The First Stop Diner’. It was where most people went to eat. She came here a lot with her boyfriend, Tom.

They’d been dating for almost a year now. She was happy with him but she was also scared of him. He could be violent; he wasn’t the same when he was with his friends. But she loved him and he said that he loved her too. Katherine wasn’t going to leave him; she was with him through thick and thin.

As she walked in with the angel she prayed that he wasn’t here, nor any of her or his friends. She didn’t need to explain why she, a seventeen year old girl, was walking around with a twenty-thirty looking man. Plus the real explanation was not even a reason she could tell.

“Kate!” An excited voice called.

Katherine cringed, she knew that voice. It was Emilie.

Emilie was her best friend, she knew everything about her and they had been friends for years. Heck, Emile even knew about her family and how they were hunters. Katherine trusted Emile with everything.

But right now, she was sitting with two of their other friends, Amy and Celia. They were friends but they weren’t as close to her as Emilie was.

Emile was a petite light blonde with bright grey eyes; smallest one of the cheer team. Amy had light brown curls and matching brown eyes, she was head cheerleader and very tall. Celia had blonde hair that was pretty much gold and green eyes, she was about Katherine’s height and also a cheerleader. They all were.

Gabriel raised an eyebrow as Emile called Katherine over, “Friends of yours?”

“Yup.”

“Well then, let’s go say hello.” And he walked over to where they sat.

Katherine stuttered and followed him over, “Hey guys.” She said standing next to Gabriel.

“Where’d you disappear to after school? What did the office want?” Celia asked taking a sip of her pop.

“Oh, my parents are out of town and I just decided to go straight home.” She said with nonchalance.

“Does that mean Tom is gonna be over?” Amy asked with a wink.

Katherine gave her a disgusted look, “Oh hell no, get your head out of the gutter Ames!”

Amy shrugged and ate a fry.

“Who’s your friend?” Emile asked with a flirty smile.

Gabriel grinned in amusement “Name is Gabriel, I’m, new here and Katherine was kind enough to show me around town. It’s a nice little town you guys have here.”

Katherine rolled her eyes “He’s a friend of the family.” And she looked her friend right in the eye to emphasize how much he was off limits.

Emilie’s eyes widened and she gave a grin “It’s a pleasure. I’m her best friend, Emilie.”

“I’m Amy.” She said twisting her curls around her finger.

“And I’m Celia.” The third girl said with a shy smile, not able to meet Gabriel’s eyes.

“Nice to meet you all. Good to see Katie here has some good friends.” Gabriel replied placing an arm around her shoulders, obviously enjoying this a little too much.

“Well we’re just here to get some food and walk around a bit. “ Katherine said, “Come on Gabriel.”

“Bye ladies!” He called with a superstar like grin.

When they were out of earshot Katherine turned to him and whispered venomously “I hate you.”

“You’re hurting my feelings.” He whispered back sarcastically.

Still fuming she ordered them each a burger to go. They stood at the counter while they waited.

“Why don’t you want me talking to your friends?” He asked.

She shrugged “Only Emilie knows about my family, I don’t need people thinking I’m cheating on Tom with a… well how old are you?”

Gabriel laughed “Well that depends. My vessel is about twenty-four and myself in general? Well let’s just say it’s a lot.”

“My point exactly. People will talk.”

“And you care?”

“Well, yeah.” Katherine replied starting to feel uncomfortable. If Tom ever thought she was cheating on him… It wouldn’t end well for her.

“Your food.” The cashier Darie said handing her a bag.

“Thanks.” She mumbled still deep in thought. She grabbed the bag and motioned for Gabriel to follow her out.

He did watching her with confusion.

They began walking down the main street in silence. Gabriel seemed to be deep in thought and Katherine just didn’t feel like talking to him.

The silence, however didn’t last. Gabriel broke it by saying “Who are you afraid of Katherine?”

“Well frankly, you and Lucifer.”

He gave her an annoyed look “You know that’s not what I mean.”

Katherine sighed “Look, you may be my angel but that doesn’t give you a free pass to every aspect of my life. You have to earn my trust so that I will tell you these things. Until you earn it I get to have my secrets.”

“No, you don’t Katherine. I can’t help you if you won’t let me!” He exclaimed in anger.

“I never asked for your help! I don’t need it; I do just fine on my own!” She retorted stubbornly.

Gabriel glared at her “Right cause let’s just forget how I saved your ass not even thirty minutes ago!”

“Yes and I thank you for that! I think I’ll be okay now though!”

“I’m not going anywhere Katherine and trust me I have other things I would rather be doing.” He stated and then disappeared.

Katherine stood there stunned; he’d just left her there!

“Ass.” She muttered in frustration.

“Kate!” Emilie called chasing after her.

She sighed; this was the person to talk to right now.

When Emilie reached her Katherine pulled her into a hug “I don’t know what to do!”

Emilie hugged her back “What do you mean Kate?”

“Gabriel, he isn’t a family friend. He isn’t even a friend really.” She murmured.

Her friend pulled away “Is he holding you hostage?”

“No, no nothing like that.” Katherine shook her head with a smile. “No, he’s… He’s my guardian angel.” It felt weird saying it aloud. She’d never thought she’d say that in her whole life.

Emile’s eyes widened “You never told me you had a guardian angel!”

“I didn’t know I had one until today.”

“So you’re telling me that Gabriel is really the Gabriel?!?”

Katherine nodded “But I don’t need one!”

“Then why is he here?”

Katherine pondered whether or not she should tell her about Lucifer. If she told her she would have someone to talk to, but… It could put Emilie in danger. “He hasn’t told me yet.” She said simply, deciding against telling her. She could suffer this one on her own.

Her friend nodded and then her eyes grew huge as she looked at Katherine, She pointed over her shoulder and Katherine spun around to see her angel.

“Finally remembered me uh?”

He rolled his eyes “I never forgot you. Come on it’s time to go home.”

“Wait, he’s staying at your place? Katherine… If Tom finds out…” Emile began horrified and Katherine cut her off with a pointed stare.

Gabriel stood there waiting for her to finish, but Katherine kept her stare on her friend and told her not to.

“Okay, let’s go!” Katherine said taking Gabriel’s hand.

“No, no. No rush. Emile, what will Tom do if he finds out a guy is staying with his girlfriend?”

Emile looked at Katherine with a fear in her eyes “Well… Tom has a, sort of temper and uh….”

“I get it; he’ll take it out on her.” He said, anger creeping into his eyes. It made the gold of his eyes more profound and frightening.

Emilie shied away “I’ll see you tomorrow Kate.” And she walked away hurriedly.

Gabriel watched Emilie walk and then turned to Katherine and said “Ready to go?”

She slowly nodded and felt the bright light reappear. She closed her eyes and felt the space around her disappear and then reappear around her. Opening her eyes she found that they were in her living room.

“I’ll sleep on the couch.” Gabriel said taking the bag from her and pulling out a burger for himself.

Katherine blinked, she’d forgotten about the food for a second. She took the bag from him and pulled out her own burger “Fine.”

“Are you okay?” He asked with a smirk.

She stuck her tongue out at him “Do I get a ride tomorrow or do I have to drive myself?”

“What am I? Your taxi driver?” He asked in mock horror “No girl you are taking yourself!”

Katherine couldn’t help but giggle “Okay then. I’ll see you tomorrow Gabriel.”

“Good night Katherine.” He replied.

She walked up the stairs and glanced quickly behind her to see him fluffing a pillow on the couch. His mousey brownish hair falling into his face. She brushed a curl from her own face and found herself simply staring at him

Stop it! She told herself and forced her legs to move and go upstairs.

She reached her room and rearranged the furniture that had been turned over. When that was done she collapsed onto her bed and stared at the ceiling. What was going on with her life? What did she suddenly feel like everything she’d ever know was wrong?

Sitting up slowly she ran her fingers through her curls exhaling. Well whatever was going on I had to be the angels fault.

Entering her bathroom she brushed her teeth and washed her makeup off. While she brushed her hair she was walked back into her room.

“Hello Katherine.” A voice said from her desk.

She jolted around to see Lucifer sitting there. She made for her door but he came between her and her exit.

“Please don’t, I only want to talk.” He said with a smile.

“You tried to kill me! Why should I listen to you?”

“That was a misunderstanding princess. I had to see what was new with you.”  Lucifer replied sweetly, “I sensed something new in your life. Wanted to find out what it was.”

Katherine rolled her eyes “The only new thing in my life is that there are angels in it! Why do you even care?”

Lucifer placed a hand on her face “Remember that promise you made? Thanks to that promise princess you must always remember that you belong to me now.” His eyes glinted dangerously “You sold your soul to me and now you’re mine.”

With that said he disappeared, leaving Katherine standing there with small tears glinting in her eyes.
