The Old Love

What happened to the days
when "I love you" meant the world?
Nowadays, "love" freely dances
on the tips of tongues
for a night of emptiness.
"Love" used to be
the most genuine thing spoken.
Now it's tossed in the air
as if it's the oxygen we breathe in.
When a boy says "I love you" to me
I want to be speechless
and swept up with awe
by the look in his eye.
I don't want to doubt
or wonder about what his reasons are
for using such a powerful word.
Love is a vague memory;
only fragments appear now.
Somehow love's definition
faded away in our minds;
and O-V-E got replaced
with U-S-T
What happened to the kisses
that shared mutual passion
with a tenderness that can
keep you warm throughout
a whole winter?
What happened to the dates
that didn't end in a bedroom?
What happened to the days
when couples talked all night
about nothing in particular,
because all they wanted was
to hear each other's voices
until they begin dreaming?
What ever happened to
surprising her with a dozen roses?
Those were the days
when "love" meant everything.
When it took your breath;
when your heart skipped a beat;
when you felt the world spinning;
when the only response you'll have
is a smile that reaches your eyes.
When a boy says "I love you" to me
I want to smile at the sincerity
that shines in his eyes.
And one day, I hope that
a boy can see the same genuineness
in my eyes when I say,
"I love you."
