Chapter 1 The Cullens

I was walking down the halls of Forks High School. There were less than four hundred students in this building. In my senior class there were about 98 other students, not including myself. The only difference between me and them was that I was 13. The other thing that set me apart from them was that I was a foster kid, a reject, a mistake, someone nobody wanted. I had one other secret that I kept and it definitely set me apart from the others. I felt a body slam into my shoulder causing me to drop my books. "Move it short stack!" I sighed and bent down to pick up my stuff. This was normal, sadly.

"I'll show you a short stack," I grumbled referring to his junk. I picked up my last note book and went to my locker. It was lunch time. I usually sat alone, not really liking anybody in this school. I choose a table next to the Cullen family as I always did. I was left alone here, and they were the only ones that didn't seem to mind me. Half the time they ignored me which was better than some of the others things I endured. Frankly I was content to ignore and be ignored.

I pulled a bottled water, an apple, and a stick string cheese from the paper lunch sack. I sighed looking at my lunch. I wished I could afford a little more food than this. I was really thin and really should weigh more than I did. I ate the cheese first, it being my favorite. Five minutes later the apple was gone as well as the cheese. I took a swig of my water before wadding up my trash as my stomach growled. "Here," a melodic voice said setting a tray full of food down in front of me.

I looked up to see Alice Cullen. She had a pixie hair cut that made her dark hair spike out around her head, but it suited her. She was lithe, like a cat or dancer. Something about her reminded me of a fairy or a pixie. Just like the rest of her family her eyes were gold and she was very pale. "Are you sure?" I asked. I had seen them buy food but had never actually seen them eat any of it. I had wondered why but never cared enough to ask.

School food wasn't exactly good. "Yes, take as much as you want."

I took the edge of the tray and slid it towards me, "Thank you Alice," I said starting to eat the salad. I never turned down free food, especially since the only food I got on a regular basis was school. The food wasn't that great either, but it would keep me alive.

"Forgive me but what is your name?" she asked sitting down at my table. Most people stayed away from me, especially at lunch since most avoided the Cullens. I wasn't sure why, they were nice enough.

"Asha, but most call me Ash," I replied. She nodded, breaking eye contact, seemingly thinking about something. I looked back at their table, particularly the member that had joined it three months ago. "Who's your new sibling?" I asked. This one was tall and heavily muscled but not to the point where it was gross. He had platinum blonde hair that was about the same length as hers. His eyes were more of a rosy gold, but had been a dark red when he first came here. I wondered if it was just some genetic quirk or if they wore contacts.

"Oh that's my brother Aiden," she answered. I looked to Jasper who had slightly long red/blonde hair. He seemed to be in pain and I sent a wave of comfort in his direction making him look at me. I offered a small warm smile. He stood tall, average height, he was thin and his muscles looked small compared to Aiden's and Emmett's. Edward was of roughly the same size as Jasper with bronze wild hair.

I looked back to Alice; the way she was looking at Aiden told me they were more than just siblings. But that wasn't any of my business. "You're a foster kid right?" Alice asked. I nodded. It wasn't something I liked to talk about. "How old are you?"

"Thirteen," I replied quietly. Just then the bell rang. "Thank you for sharing your lunch with me Alice, I'll see you in English class," I said taking her tray and taking the orange and fruit cup, and putting them in my plastic grocery bag which served as my back pack. The system wouldn't pay for me to have stuff like that. They figured I would be living in a dorm room soon enough with enough grant money and scholarships that I could live on my own. I lived in a crappy orphanage. They weren't always very kind to the kids that lived there.

I dumped the rest of the tray into the trash and went to history class where I sat next to Jasper. I sat down and pulled out a pen and notebook. As soon as the lecture was started I was writing. Half way through the class Jasper spoke to me, "At lunch, that wave of calm was you." It wasn't a question. I only nodded, my hand continuing to fly across the paper. "Thank you," he whispered.

"Any time," I replied glancing at him and giving him another brief smile. Soon enough class was over and I headed to English class where I normally sat in the back alone. I pulled my text book out and note book and pen as someone sat beside me. I looked to see Alice, "Hey Alice," I said as class started. My last class of the day was PE. Despite my lanky frame I was good at this class. Today we had to run the mile. Running was one of the things I did best. My long legs helped me a great deal.

When classes were done for the day I went to my locker to grab my notes for finals and left my books in my locker, unfortunately. I couldn't get them in the plastic bag. I packed up and headed for the parking lot. I saw the bus leaving, I had never managed to catch it, it always left before me. I wondered why I still bothered. It was going to be a long cold wet walk. Just as I started to walk a car rushed by me, splashing water on me. I was now soaked. I shook, trying to rid myself of the water.

The car didn't even stop, it kept on going. It's a wonder I haven't managed to get sick in this weather without so much as a rain coat. And now my notes were wet. This finals week before the summer was harder than it usually was. I wished that I knew some true friends, a home, a family, a place where I could stay without fear of being returned like a library book.
