Maya POV
Josh stands there looking stricken.
"Josh I-"
"You know what, its fine who cares you're like a 5 year old orphan anyways." He storms out. I can't believe what he said. I sink to the floor and my vision is blurred by tears. Riley sits next to me and pats my back.
"He didn't mean it, Maya. You know Josh and his temper..."
"Yeah and I know he doesn't have one." I reply.
"Maya is everything okay?" Lucas asks from the doorway. He looks genuinely concerned. I stand up shakily.
"Yeah, yeah I'm fine." I close my eyes. "I, uh, better go though." I quickly climb out the window and walk around town for a while before stopping at the secret lake shed. I sit on the chair inside and think.
"How often do you come here?" I look up startled. Lucas is standing there.
"Whenever I need to be alone I guess." I say.
"Oh sorry I should.." He starts to walk out.
"No, its fine stay." I smile. He smiles back and walks in.
"So whats with all the books?" He gestures to the small mountain of books I had collected. I shrug.
"I don't know I go around and see free books that are about to be thrown out and.." I trail off.
"Some of these books are really good." Lucas says reading a few titles out loud. "Looking for Alaska, Paper Towns..."
"Yeah well I don't exactly have any plans on reading them but they look so new I didn't think they were ready I guess." I shrug, thinking I sounded pretty stupid. To my surprise Lucas nods.
"That makes sense." He says. I glance around the piles. Something was seriously wrong. I stand up quickly.
"Whats wrong?" Lucas asks.
"My diary!" I yell. "Where is it? Someone stole it!"
"No.. no one stole it per say.." Lucas says nervously.
"Then where is it?" I say suspicious.
"I um.." He thinks. "I gave it to Josh I believe." Oh no. No no no no no this isn't happening. I sit back down and put my head into my arms. Lucas sits next to me and puts his arms around my shoulders.
"Maya its okay, he said he wouldn't read it." He says reassuringly.
"Yeah but that was before..." I trail off.
"Before what?" I don't reply. "Maya." Lucas says. "What happened?"
"I.. can't tell you." I say finally, I lift my head and look him in the face. "I really can't but I need it back before Josh reads it because trust me, he will." He frowns.
"How are you going to do that?" He asks.
"Easy, I'll just go into NYU again and sneak into his room and take it back."
"Um no, Maya that's illegal." Lucas frowns deeper. He still looks cute. Okay I have no idea where that came from.
"I've done worse."
"Then I'm coming too." He brightens.
"Sorry huckleberry but breaking in isn't exactly something for a hop-along." He looks at me.
"Texas Lucas." He says. "I meet you at the park at 10 tonight." He walks out.
I'm beginning to understand what Riley sees in him. Shh don't tell.
