In the dark recesses at the back of the auditorium, the heavy aroma of a sweet cigar and the curling smoke it emitted were the only hints of a presence there. Jack Bellows was content to stay in the background, enjoying the drama played out before him. In an hour, it would be a new year and he could think of nothing he'd rather be doing and of no one he'd rather spend it with than the dark-haired child who fidgeted in his arms.

Eventually, she settled down, entwining her own small arms about his neck and with one delicate hand, she caressed his thinning hair. Then kissing him softly on the cheek, Destiny Stevens sighed, resting her head on his shoulder and Bellows smiled with the joy of a man looking forward to the decade to come.
