Alfred never fought in his war.

He was the soul embodiment of both south and north; which somewhat means he gets both thoughts of pro-slavery and anti-slavery. (Even before the war he was always neutral, never either side.)

He WAS apart of the union, but was soon not.

The reason:
In the first battle fought, the both thoughts of slavery in Alfred's mind, he blacked out when both sides clashed.

When he awoke...

He was told that he began to shot men from both sides.

He then immediately went back to Washington D.C. & helped Lincoln with he war.
