The parable of the leaven or also known as parable of the yeast. Both mathew and luke's version has minor difference so luke's is in nlt version. This is the shortest parable jesus told.
Matthew 13:33(ESV)
Parable of the leaven
"He told them another parable. "The kingdom of heaven is like leaven that a woman took and hid in three measures of flour, till it was all leavened."
Luke 13:20-21(NLT)
Parable of the Yeast
"He also asked, "What else is the Kingdom of God like? It is like the yeast a woman used in making bread. Even though she put only a little yeast in three measures of flour, it permeated every part of the dough."
Jesus uses this parable to illustrate the kingdom of heaven. It was the fourth parable in a string of parables presented by Jesus as he taught a crowd along along the shore of the sea of Galilee. A woman takes yeast (leaven) and mixes it into dough. Eventually, the whole of the dough is leavened. In this parable, i think it's important to define "kingdom of heaven." I think Jesus is referring to His domain as the Messiah." for behold, the kingdom of God is in the midst of you." (Luke 17:21).
The kingdom of God may have small beginnings, but it will increase. Yeast is tiny and a very small bit is needed but it spreads through all the dough. Only a little is kneaded into the dough. Just as, Jesus's domain started with twelve men in an obscure corner of Galilee, but it has spread throughout the world.
Again as yeast makes dough rise from the within so does the kingdom of God exerts its influence from within, not from without. God first changes the heart of a person, and that internal change is seen outside. Just as yeast works until the dough has completely risen, the ultimate benefit of the kingdom of God will be worldwide. The kingdom of God works invisibly, its effect is evident to all. The same as yeast does its job slowly, secretly and invisble we see the evidence in the bread. Jesus is using everyday items to get his point over. And it is still as relevant today. Jesus used yeast as the nature if yeast is to grow and change whatever it contacts. When we accept jesus christ, become part of the "kingdom" his grace grows in our hearts and changes us from inside out. Some people will find it hard to accept the change. But there is no better feeling than the peace that only the messiah, the great "i am" can give. As the good news transforms lives, it attracts more and more of the world. I will finish off with
(2 Corinthians 3:18) "And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit."
