The parable of the persistant widow. Luke 18: 2 -5
"He said, "In a certain city there was a judge who neither feared God nor respected man. And there was a widow in that city who kept coming to him and saying, 'Give me justice against my adversary.' For a while he refused, but afterward he said to himself, 'Though I neither fear God nor respect man, yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will give her justice, so that she will not beat me down by her continual coming.'"
In this parable the poor powerless widow persists in nagging a corrupt, powerful judge to do justice for her. Really had to think about this one to get to what jesus was saying. I think he is saying we have "to pray always and to not lose heart" (Luke 18:1). This was too jesus' s followers. And us. We are the woman, and the prayed-to person, god is the corrupt judge. I battled with this but we know that Jesus doesn't mean that God is corrupt. I think the point is if persistence pays off with a corrupt human of limited power, how much more will it pay off with a just God of infinite power.I think the purpose of the parable is to encourage Christians to persevere in their faith against all odds. Jesus's new church. Comparing the corrupt judge with a just God , makes me think that God's will is at work even in a corrupt world. A judge's job is to do justice, and by God, he gave the widow justice. Whether or not they acknowlege it the judge is by God's authorization. This indicates that there is hope that even in the midst of systemic injustice, justice will be done. Okay as christians we cannot right every wrong in the world . But we must never give up hope, and never stop working for the greater good.
