Chapter Fourteen: Sky Winters

I nearly said no to writing this after writing Chapter Thirteen: Scavengers And Survivors. But I decided to go ahead with this one.

It was the day after the big tournament. And my team had won.

We had gotten our prizes, which was different for each person as each person needed something else.

Some of the adults got promoted, the younger ones got new things, Callie got to keep her baby dinosaur as her mom agreed and then I had to choose something to get as my reward.

I couldn't decide so I was told, when I thought of something, I could just ask.

*Knock knock knock*

"I'll get it!" Maria called.

"Ok Maria." I said, as I was getting lunch ready.

"Mom! Someone's here!" Maria yelled.

I sighed then turned down the flame of the cooker. I walked into the hall and went towards my daughter.

"Oh, hello." I greeted. The person there was a boy. Maybe thirteen. Definitely older than Maria. "And who may you be?" I was trying to be polite though manners are not my strong point.

"M-My name is S-Sky. S-Sky Winters." he replied shakily.

"Winters? Is your mother Laura Winters?" I asked.

"Y-Yes. She's my Mother." he answered, not stuttering as much.

"Ok. Well, why are you here?" I questioned, not rushing anything. "Firstly, Maria, go get your dad and tell him to meet me in the living room. And you, Sky, come in." I made way for for the boy to come in.

We went to the sitting room and met Max there.

"Max, this is Sky. The son of a friend of mine, Laura Winters. Sky, this is my husband Max." I pointed to the couch and Sky sat down. "Maria, Leo, come out. I know you're hiding behind the door."

"We weren't eavesdropping!" Maria exclaimed.

"Don't worry. Take a seat. Kids, this is Sky Winters, as you may have heard. Sky," I said, turning to the teenage boy. "These are my kids, Maria and Leo."

"Ok.. So what you're saying is that this morning, you were told that your parents... Left us and you have no where to go. Am I right?" I asked Sky.

"Yes."

I glanced at Max to see his reaction. 

"Sky, why don't you go to the leader? He'll sort something out." Max told him.

"No. I don't want to." Sky replied, looking down at the ground.

"Well, we can't take care of you because we already have our own family to look after." Max said, which I thought was pretty mean.

"I see.. I'll be on my way then..." Sky got up slowly.

"Wait. Sit back down Sky." I commanded, not in a harsh tone though. 

"What are you thinking Alecxis?" Max demanded.

"Well, since I still need to tell the leader what I have chosen for my reward, and since I have no idea what I need or want, I was think,"

"Oh no. You can't be serious. We already have those two messers to deal with!" Max was a bit annoyed, I could tell.

"Oh but I am. I'm very serious Max. Sky has no family left. His family were rejects from their own families and came here to seek shelter, so Sky has no relatives that will accept him for who he is and his parents just died yesterday. I can't stand by and watch a child, any age, go around, an orphan." I told him.

"But the H.Q. can find a suitable family for him." Max argued.

"Yes but I can tell he doesn't want that, do you?" I asked Sky.

"No." he answered.

"See? Anyway, before I do confirm this, I need to find out some connections and things. For the moment though, Sky can stay in the spare bedroom." I said firmly.

Max sighed in defeat. He knows me and the fact that I'm very stubborn. 

"Maria, Leo, show Sky his new room." I got up.

"Ok Mam!" Leo was at the door.

"Sky, go and follow them. You guys and play for a while, if you want. Also, lunch will be on hold, unless Max learns how to cook in the next half hour." I told them, heading to the door.

I headed to the records room and searched in the archive bar 'Hunter and Laura Winters' and it came up with their files and their son's.

I read through the three very fast. 

"Got it." I muttered.

I picked up the paper files and ran out of the records room to my next destination.

I arrived at H.Q.'s leader's office.

I knocked on the door.

"Who is it?" 

"It's Alecxis Powers." I answered.

"Come in."

I opened the door.

"Take a seat." 

"Thanks. Um, I want to talk about my tournament reward." I started.

"Yes? Have you thought of want you wanted?" he asked.

"Yes. I have."

"What is it then?"

"Did Hunter and Laura Winters die yesterday?" I asked even though I knew the answer.

"Yes.. Why do you ask?" the leader questioned.

"Well, their son, Sky Winters, showed up at my house a little over an hour ago." I explained.

"That's where he went to." I heard the leader murmur.

"Max was going to bring Sky here, to sort out a new family for him. But Sky doesn't want that. I asked Sky what he wanted to do and he said anywhere except a new family with random people. He wants to be with people he knows and trusts..." I trailed off.

"Are you implying that?... You want to?..." he asked slowly.

"Yes. I would like to adopt Sky Winters."
