No Pomp But All Circumstance

There was a note pinned to my door when I got back. I took it down and unlocked my door. The door stopped after swinging in after a few inches. I flipped on the light and stood there in amazement. My room was totally ransacked.

My drawers were open and my clothes were pulled out and all over the floor. The closet door was open, the clothes in there on the floor as well. My books were pulled off their shelves and lay in various positions around the room. I could just imagine what the study looked like.

I dropped the letter from the corkboard and searched my pockets for my phone.

I didn’t have many numbers but Gwen was the only person I thought of to call.

“Oh, Cass, I’m glad you called. I need to talk to you about Peter. He didn’t mean it…”

“Gwen! Enough about Peter! Is the Magical Door locked?”

“No, why?”

“Someone broke into my room.”

“What? You can’t be serious! Did you call the cops?”

She repeated me news to someone else in the room, covering the mouth piece badly.

“I haven’t gotten that far yet. Should I?”

“I don’t know,” she sounded freaked out. “Probably.”

“That means I would have to hang up…”

I heard Gwen’s muffled talking, finally coving the mouth piece well.

“Cass?” she finally said coming back on the line. “Call the cops. We’re on the way over but call me back once you get off the phone with them. Understand?”

I nodded vigorously but then remembered that she couldn’t see me. “Ok,” I said in a meek voice.

I wasn’t a brave person on principle. The only time I’d been brave…

“See you in a bit,” she said.

“Ok.”

I hung up and then quickly called the cops. I went over to the Magical Door and opened it, peaking into Gwen’s room just in case.

I gave the operator my information and she offered to stay on the line with me. But I told her I had friends on their way over and I promised to call them back. She advised me to get to a safe place and wait for the police to show up.

I hung up and immediately called Gwen back.

“Hey, where are you?” she asked as soon as she answered.

“You’re room, which looks fine by the way.”

“We should be there in about five minutes.”

“That’s fast.”

“Yeah, well, Peter is driving like a maniac.”

“Tell him if he gets in an accident and kills you, I’m going to kill him.”

She laughed and relayed the message.

“He means well, Cass.”

“I’m sure he does,” I said sarcastically.

Then I heard a noise coming from my room and I sat very still. Gwen was going on and on about something but I ignored her. I was trying to listen for the noise again.

“Cass?”

“Hold on. I hear something.”

“Don’t you do it, Cass, you stay right there. Don’t go looking for trouble.”
