We loaded into the two separate cars, Peter and I in one, while Gwen and Bren took his car. We left the parking lot first but I had a feeling they were going to take way longer than we would to get back to the Marks’s house.

“What did Peyote want?” Peter asked.

“She wanted to know if I was planning on staying there or if I’d made other arrangements.”

“What did you say?”

I shrugged. “I told her that was more of a question for my father than one for me. I don’t know what he’s planning, if he’s planning anything at all. He could just be here for a few days and then take off again.”

“Do you really think he’ll do that?”

“I’m not sure. We’re not really…connecting the way he wanted. And to tell the truth I just…every time I look at him all I see is a man I can’t trust.”

Peter nodded and squeezed my hand. “Why did she need to know anyways? It’s not like it matters, they have plenty of rooms that are vacant.”

“I guess normally it wouldn’t but there is a new student coming in who needs boarding. I guess she wants one of the rooms that have the lived in feel.”

“A new student?” He looked at me briefly before turning his eyes back to the road. “Wow. That’s two in one month.”

I laughed. “I wonder if it’s a girl or boy.”

“Does it matter?” he joked.

“Yes.” I smiled at him. “It would be nice to know if I had new competition.”

He smiled. “I only have eyes for you.”

“I know but you’ve just started dating the new girl. Who’s to say you won’t go after the new, new girl?”

“And ruin what I’ve got going with you?” He lifted my hand and kissed the back of it. “Never.”

“You say that now.”

The drive back was quick and a black car sat outside the garage.

“It’s your dad’s car.”

“I thought Dad drove an SUV?”

“Normally he does but I guess he wanted something smaller today.”

“I don’t understand why,” I said while getting out of the car. “Are you sure he would even fit in that?”

Peter chuckled. “I’m sure he found a way of folding into it.”

He pulled me back against him and we waited for Gwen and Bren to get there. He rested his chin on my shoulder, wrapping his arms around my waist.

“Do you think he’s going to move here?”

“If I know you well enough, and I think I do, this is where I’m supposed to make you feel better.”

I elbowed him gently. “Peter…”

“Do you want him to?”

I thought about it. I wasn’t sure. What I said in the car was true, we weren’t connecting. I’d tried and it almost worked but I just couldn’t…

“I don’t know.”

We stayed quiet for a few moments. I didn’t think Gwen and Bren were that far behind us but apparently they were.

“I was thinking…”

“About?”

“There’s this dance coming up…”
