Emma's POV

When I woke up the next morning, it was about noon. Killian had left for work hours ago, and sadly, I didn't get to let him out. But he'd be back before I could really miss him. I felt bad, actually. He got up early in the morning whenever I had work, and I couldn't even return the favor.

I slipped on some clothes and put on some makeup, and grabbed my wallet. Rent was coming up fast, and I knew I had to work more in order to pay it. Being a bailbonds person, I would get enough money to live off of, but I had a higher rent and more bills to pay now.

I left the apartment and went out to my bug. I got in and went to the store. Killian and I had made a list a few days ago, so I knew what I needed. Once I got in the store, I was happy that it wasn't too crowded. I was in no mood to wait for people to pick out what they wanted. It wasn't hard to just grab a box of crackers and go. The people at the supermarket always reminded me of the people in my high school, where every kid was slower than a snail. I was looking for the peanut butter that Killian liked. He had a specific kind that he wanted, and he was making me become on of those kinds of people who stall in the store.

"Excuse me." I looked up and saw Neal. A smile grew on his face as he saw me, but inside, I wanted to scream. As I said, I was in no mood for people. "Hey, Emma."

"Hi, Neal."

"You left before morning," he said as he looked at the jellies and jams that were next to the peanut butter.

"Yeah. Staying really isn't my thing."

"It's a shame. I was going to make you breakfast."

"Maybe another time."

"Oh, so you want there to be a next time?"

I internally groaned. 'Get. The. Fuck. Out. Of. My. Way.' "It's just something that people say, Neal."

"Relax, I know," he laughed. "I'll let you get back to your shopping."

I nodded and watched as he walked away. I breathed a sigh of relief and finished the grocery shopping. When I got back to the apartment, there was an hour left of Killian's shift. I decided to distract myself by putting the food away. It didn't take long to put all of the food away, but by then, Killian would be off in five minutes.

I laid down on the couch and distracted myself with some tv. When the door opened, I sat straight up, but didn't look behind me. A moment after he shut the door, he sat down beside me and put his arm on the back of the couch behind me.

"Long day?" I asked, finally turning to him.

"You have no bloody idea. My ex-girlfriend showed up today. Went on and on about how much she misses me and that what she did was wrong. She said that she was in love with us both, and couldn't decide who to pick. She apologized, but once we broke up, she broke up with that other guy," he explained with a long sigh.

I wanted to tell him how Graham came onto me at the bar, but decided that that story was for another time. "Just don't think about the good things she made you feel. Think about how you felt after you learned what she did to you. And who's to say she won't do it again? You don't want to put yourself through that again."

"I know. I wasn't going to get back with her anyway."

"Good. You don't need that negativity in your life." I got up from the couch and went into the kitchen. "What do you want for dinner?"

"It doesn't matter." He got up from the couch and went over to his bedroom door. "I don't really have an appetite, but you can make whatever you want. I think I'm going to take a nap."

"Okay. Night."

He went into his room and shut the door without saying another word. My heart sunk. I waited all day to see him. Killian was entertaining, and I honestly loved to be around him. I wasn't really hungry either, so I went into my room as well. I opened the window and went out onto the fire escape. The wind blew and it bit at my skin, but I didn't really care. I sat down on the cool metal and let my legs dangle in between the bars. I wanted to know what that girl did to Killian. What she did that brought back so many bad memories.

Killian's POV

I shut the door, feeling a little bit guilty that I left Emma alone. I was sitting on my bed when I heard rattling out on the fire escape. I moved the curtain back and saw Emma sitting on the fire escape. Her legs dangled off the edge, and the wind blew her hair out of her face. She was looking out at the sunset. She was an open book to me, and I knew that she was lost in her thoughts. She looked like a bloody goddess as her hair danced in the wind and shimmered in the sun. I knew she didn't want to be alone, so I decided to join her. I went into her room and climbed through the window, but I sat on the windowsill. "You okay?" I asked.

She looked over at me and nodded. "How did you know I was out here?"

"I saw you through my bedroom window."

She sighed, and her forehead fell in between the bars of the railing. "I'm just tired."

"That's not all, is it?"

"It is."

"You don't have to lie to me, you know. I know what you're going through."

"No, you don't!" I jumped at her sudden raise of her voice. "You have absolutely no idea what I'm feeling or what I'm going through!"

I climbed out of the window and sat beside her. "I do. You're lonely."

"All I've had is myself all my life. Why am I not used to feeling alone?"

"Because you have someone who cares about you."

"Cared."

"No. I care about you. You have me."

She scoffed, "we're friends, Jones."

"And friends care about their other friends. Try something new, darling. It's called trust."

I climbed through the window and went back into my room. When I looked out the window again, Emma was gone.
