Ride into Darkness

  "Wait, why can't you two transport me with you?" you inquired, as Aberrous brought out the serving tray with breakfast on it.

"We're not entirely sure; just know that in the past we have tried on several occasions. You just weren't aware of them, my dear lady."

"We do believe that it has something to do with you being an ace. Your ability, which allows you to transport between worlds, might be coming into conflict with our ability, therefore not allowing us to perform such an action. Again, we're not sure, but that's the most likely explanation, Miss ______."

Aberrous by now had placed all the plates and glasses on the table. Thus he left you three after giving you a small smile, which indicated that he was glad to have you back at the castle. Placing your spoon into the strawberry yogurt with almond granola, you lifted it and ate some of your meal while considering the brothers' words. They did make some sense and frankly you couldn't come up with an explanation, however learning that they had tried to transport you before without your consent was a little vexing. At least they had failed and this potential conflict between your two capabilities provided something positive.

This did bring up another issue though, would they be able to travel with you to other worlds? It would be nice to travel without them, but memories of your trip to Valinquinia popped up in your head. Even in that instance, you had the company of others despite the displeasure of traveling with Tipora. Would you be alright with venturing into the unknown by yourself? The idea troubled you. Who knew what creatures lurked in those places mentioned in the song? You were actually quite lucky that the streams of Avaka might be in this world, but the other places were most likely not. Furthermore, the brothers would react horrendously if they discovered that only you could go to the other worlds.

Despite the fact that they annoyed you at times and took things to far, it would be nice to have them with you on your journey. Having the extra protection would alleviate some of the worry of venturing into a potential threatening area. Thus hopefully they could still go with you, but you wouldn't know until you opened a portal.

Sighing, you took another bite of breakfast and replied, "Well let's hurry then."

                                                                                   ~~~~~~~~~~
The ride across the grasslands was peaceful with the grey cloud cover overhead. At the same time, it was exhilarating with the wind rushing past your face, as you pressed your horse on ahead. Muscles rippled with the horse's powerful strides, carrying you far ahead of the brothers' two horses. Thus you felt victorious when you reached the carnival first.
Getting off the thick leather saddle on the beige horse, you were mindful of the spikes protruding out of its hide. The brothers soon caught up and dismounted their horses before pulling out dried rabbit meat. Each gave a piece to their horses and Diamond handed you a strip of meat to give to your horse. Taking it, you held it out to your horse and it happily consumed it, the horse's only eye in the hues of green, blue and black depicting delight. Patting it gently on its regular horse skull, which served as protective armor, you smiled lightly before thanking it for the ride. It neighed before turning and running off with its companions.
With the horses gone, you turned to the back entrance to the carnival. In front of you was a wrought iron gate with a lock on it. The iron was twisted into various floral designs, however the flora appeared wilted rather than full of life. Then again it didn't surprise you, since this was the carnival with the terrifying manager and kelpie carousel. As for the lock, it was a simple iron one that had a keyhole in it.
Diamond walked up to the lock and you noticed an iron key in his right hand. Placing it in the lock and turning the key, a click was heard before the lock dropped to the ground. He pushed the gate opened and held it open for Heart and you. Heart allowed you to enter before him. Normally such a gesture would be considered gentlemanly, but with the gate leading to the carnival you would've preferred Heart entering first.
Pushing your dread aside, you went inside the awful place. When all three of you were in, Diamond closed the gate and the lock attached itself back to the gate. Lights were flickering on, as the three of you walked along the pavement. The brothers were in front of you, since they knew the path to the boat ride.
On the trip there, you saw the various rides and stalls that you passed on your first time here. Once again you noticed the colorful cotton candy stall, that was actually only a pile of dust. The miniature carousel creaked along with its rusted horses and the larger carousel was in the distance. Luckily, Heart and Diamond took a path leading away from the terrifying merry-go-round. Before it disappeared from your sight, you swore that you saw one of the horses turn into its kelpie self and grin at you.
A shiver went up your spine and you moved a little closer to the brothers. The familiar neon pink and orange balloons were tied in various places along the path, though a loose pink one hovered strangely in the middle of the pavement. Your eyes were pinned to the lone floating object, as you passed by it. When you thought you were a safe distance from it, you turned your focus back to the front of you. At that moment a loud popping sound filled the air. This sent you jumping into the air while letting out a quiet scream. Both brothers turned to you before glancing at the balloon fragments that lay on the ground.
Heart combed his left fingers through his blue locks before unsheathing the saber at his side. Looking back, you noticed something floating above the popped balloon. It resembled a simple pink ball, but with large empty eye sockets and a toothless mouth. Upon seeing Heart coming towards it, the thing flew straight at him. Apparently, it didn't think Heart to be a threat. This wrong assumption caused it to be sliced in half and fall to the ground before popping itself into small pink fragments.
"What was that? I don't remember the balloons holding creatures inside them," you voiced, glancing worriedly at the other balloons.
"It's known as an aerorum. They like to hide in any airborne objects. Once they find one suitable to their tastes, they take on that object's form and live in it until finding the right time to strike for food, however they eat almost anything living," Diamond explained, as Heart returned to you two.
"I suggest we move a little faster in case anymore aerorum are hiding in the balloons. I really don't want to fight an army of those things," Heart added, sheathing the saber.
Neither Diamond nor you had objections to this. Thus the three of you moved faster through the carnival. Empty stalls filled the sides of the pavement, but some contained various items. Some had stuffed animals in plastic bags, sealing them against the wear of the weather. Others had pieces of costume jewelry and small trinkets like good luck charms.
When your eyes caught sight of a brightly lit ride, you knew that you had arrived at the boat ride. Blue and purple lights flashed obnoxiously at the top of the ride, lighting up the scenery on the front of the ride. Painted towards the bottom of the entrance was a stream that ran through woods. Instead of fish swimming in the stream, dolphins dominated the stream while various bear cubs played the pipes on the water's edge. Up above the forest, a night sky shone and that's where the flashing lights took the place of stars. Lastly, in giant flashing letters, as if the stars weren't enough, the name An Enchanting Passage was written.
Rolling your eyes at the cheesy name, you turned your gaze away from the lights. You had seen enough of them. Blue and purple boats floated in the water. Frankly, you were surprised to the see the water so clean after years of abandonment. Then again it was a wonder that almost all the lights in the carnival were still working. No doubt the brothers had some part in it, but you also suspected the manager. He was still alive regardless of his dreadful form and probably still saw it fit to keep his carnival in order.
Cautiously, you approached the first boat in the line of them and stepped inside with the brothers following after you. Diamond sat on the right side of you while Heart sat in the back seat. This was probably wise in case something attempted to attack from behind. Your hands rested on your daggers in your belt that hung around your hips. You attached this belt to your person after breakfast that morning.
As if sensing that there were individuals wishing to go through the ride, the boat began to move slowly in the water. The lights flashed overhead, giving quite the contrast to the dark tunnel awaiting you. If only the lights had been distributed equally in this ride, rather than all at the beginning of ride, for the darkness awaiting you didn't look pleasant in the slightest.
Up ahead you could hear the rush of water and your body tensed. Normally, you would love a fast ride, but in the waiting darkness you didn't like the prospect. Furthermore, monsters could strike at any time. As everything around you went pitch black, you gripped your daggers all the harder. Going further in, you could hear something other than the water, something more sinister like a low cackling. At first it remained only a quiet background sound, but soon it started to surround the boat. There was no telling if a creature was above you, behind you, or at one of your sides; you could only wait for it to attack first.
