Purr.

Caressing Spaz’s soft fur, I took a minute to think of things after another unbelievable day. I was going to have to get used to it –not that I didn’t want to. I picked up Spaz and brought him up to my face.

I looked straight into its eyes and couldn’t help but think how identical they were to Taym’s. A vivid animalistic yellow. The thought of him brought a smile to my face; and frankly, I’ve been smiling all day.

Funny how messed up I can get around him, yet, it almost feels like I can be myself and not worry about it. Maybe it’s because he’s got more issues than I do? I didn’t know but I definitely wanted to find out.

I could hardly believe how rapidly we were bonding. I mean – I let him up into my room today, for heaven’s sake! It was for a good cause though… that didn’t sound like an excuse did it…? Well, handing him over a copy of my deceased Gran’s top secret stuff to help uncover the rest of us mental lunatics out there was a pretty serious matter.

I recognized the hum of the Toyota Pickup and looked at Spaz wearing my ‘I’m-nuts’ face on.

I was expressing my feelings to a cat.

I headed downstairs to greet Mom and Rita as the front door shut, but Rita had already gone half way up the stairs, grasped me by the arm and pushed me back into my room.

She closed the door behind her, crossed her arms, and looked down at me as I questioningly stared at her.

“Uh… Hey…” I told her disturbed, rubbing my arm hard.

“Hey…? HEY?!” She bellowed and suddenly looked back at the door expecting it to swing open, “All that! All that and you ‘hey’ me!” She hissed this time with a much lower voice.

“What on earth are you talking about?” I innocently said tensing up.

She furrowed her brow, and began listing things with the help of her hands. “First of all, you broke into my café without my permission.”

“How’d you find out!” I gasped beginning to worry at what she had next to say.

“Second of all,” She said sticking out a second finger, “I’m pretty sure I remember having the ‘Stay away from that boy’ conversation!”

Oh god… I looked away in attempt of covering up my facial expression.

“Third of all,” Her voice began to get louder, “Not only do you see him, but you bring him in here too!”

Everything I wished wouldn’t happen, just did.

My lips parted as I was about to utter, but then it hit me and confusion made its way into my mind.

“Hold on… how could you possibly know about that?!” I asked shocked.

“Are you seriously asking me that question Leah? You forgot Ms. Razi lives just across the street, eh? She’s got her binoculars pointed straight into this very room. If it wasn’t for me, naive little sis’… ” Rita snapped, “Mom would’ve been charging his house by now!”

“Does she know?!” I squealed, my heart sinking.

“No! I covered up for you again!” Irritated, she took a seat beside me.

I looked out the window and into Ms. Razi’s bedroom, and there she was, watching intently. That lady could not possibly get any creepier than this.

I tried thinking of a way to make it up to Rita, but apparently she wasn’t done. I looked back at her as she stuck out her fourth finger and butterflies paid my stomach a visit. She couldn’t have known more than that could she!

“And fourth, worst and last of all…” She said calmly this time, “How come you got a boyfriend and I don’t! That just defies the laws of our physics!”

Laughing heartily, I got up, winked at Ms. Razi, who failed at an attempt to hide her very obvious large head, and shut the curtains tight.

Turning back to Rita I said, “He’s not my boyfriend…” I tried not to sound disappointed and went on, “He is my friend though. And you’re going to have to put up with this.”

She opened her mouth to argue but I hushed her.

“Not this time, Rita. This time, you’re going to have to actually help me out. I showed him some of Gran’s stuff.”

“You what!” She yelled.

“He says he recognizes it and he’s got a relative, his cousin or something, that can help out. We’re going to be finding the rest.”

“Whoa! Hold on…” Rita turned to face me, “Relative, eh? You got yourself a relative too you know.”

“I do?” I candidly asked.

“Yes you do!” She snapped. I smiled as the fact that she wanted to help us out too dawned on me.

“Is he hot?”

“Huh?”

“His cousin, Leah! Is he hot?”

“We haven’t even met yet!” I dully replied.

“Alright then, we’ll all meet in the Café.”

“The Café’s messed up, Rita.”

“Hah! When was the last time you checked in!” She tossed my crumpled up hair band at me, and ignoring the fact that I was actually there this afternoon, she went on, “We’re already making rapid progress. Text him the address, I’ll be free by 5 P.M tomorrow if that’s okay.” She got up.

“Rita, try and not be too flirty.”

“I’ll do my best –and you know what that means!” She winked and walked out.

I couldn’t help but feel good. This was definitely not what I had expected, yet I loved how it turned out.

I got into bed at an early hour since I couldn’t wait to see him again tomorrow. There was lots I wanted to tell him –you know, share a few random stuff maybe.

I tugged myself in, shut one eye and kept the other aimed constantly at my room’s only window.

I wasn’t going to sleep tonight. Not while that window and 90 year old Ms. Razi still exist.
