"What's a cerebral cortex?"

"It's the cerebrum's outer surface."

"What about bipolar disorder?"

"That's a mood disorder that alternates with periods of mania and depression."

"And broca's area?"

"The area of the brain that translates someone's thoughts and speech."

Niall nodded, placing the flash cards we made hours ago down on the carpet of the living room. "Seems to me like you know your shit."

"We've been at this for hours. I'll probably end up dreaming of a neuron tonight." I sighed, splaying my arms out across the floor where I currently laid. Paper crunched under my movement and I sat up, looking down at the psychology textbooks, our notes, and various different colored highlighters surrounding us. We had moved the coffee table when we got here and plopped ourselves down to use the carpeted area of the room as our study space. Lila had gotten home an hour ago, took one look at all the books and messiness around us, then left to hide in her room. Apparently seeing so much studying gives her a headache and stresses her out.

"Well I think we're done studying, we know enough to at least pass with a B."

"I freaking despise this class, there's too many terms to memorize. Remind me again why I chose it?"

"Because you need the GE's." He pointed out and I scowled, to which he chuckled at.

"Yeah well, I should have dropped it the first week." I mumble, moving to stand up from my seated position and adjusting the dress I still had on, afraid I might have flashed Niall despite the fact I put on a pair of underwear and spandex shorts underneath the moment we stepped through the door. "Anyways, enough about psychology before my brain explodes. I'm hungry, should I order us some pizza?"

"Sure."

I walked over to the other side of the room to get my phone where I left it on the coffee table. Reaching for it, I unlocked the screen to dial a dominos. "What kind of pizza do you want? Pineapple and pepperonis okay?" I asked, searching for the number online but pause when Niall doesn't answer. Looking up expectantly, I see him staring out the window on the other side of the room. His teeth were sunk into his bottom lip and his eyebrows were pinched together, seeming to be thinking very hard about something.

"Niall?" I ask and he blinks at the window. "Hey, are you alright?"

He turns to look at me the, eyes glazed over when he suddenly straightens and shakes his head slightly. "Wait what? I didn't hear you, sorry."

I frown, dropping my hand holding my phone to my side. "I asked if you're okay?"

"Oh," he blinked again, then forced a smile on his face but it was easy to see it was fake. "Yeah, I'm fine."

"No you're not." I state. Him and I might have stopped being friends for a year but I could still tell when he was lying. He was easy to read most of the time and though some things about him have changed, his lying habits have not.  "What's wrong?"

"Nothing, Emmy."

"You're lying. Tell me what's wrong."

"I said it's nothing."

"Niall wh-,"

"Why do you even care?" He snaps out of nowhere and I reel back from the tone in his voice, completely taken off guard with his sudden harshness. "You don't."
