The boyfriend

I put the plates on the table for dinner tonight. Harry puts the cutlery next to plates and suddenly the bell rings. Today, we are going to meet the boyfriend of our daughter. I already had a serious chat with Harry where I told him to be kind and I hope he has internalized it.

Our daughter jumps downstairs and opens the door swiftly. Harry and I are waiting in the dinner room. I look at Harry and see him frowning, a deep crease forming between his eyebrows. I squeeze his hand and then our daughter walks in with her boyfriend. The young boy looks very kind and sympathetic. I smile and walk toward him to shake his hand.

"Mrs. Styles." He says with a nice smile and shakes my hand.

"Oh call me Y/N." I offer him and he nods, still smiling. Then he walks to Harry and I bite my lip and hope that Harry will behave nicely.

"Mr. Styles." They both shake hands but Harry doesn't return the smile. I see how Harry is observing the boy with watchful eyes.

"So you're the boyfriend of our daughter, right?"

"Yes, Yes I am." He walks back to our daughter and puts an arm around her. I smile because it reminds so much of me and Harry when we were younger. I see how he looks at her and she at him. It is just so sweet. I don't see why Harry is so against a boyfriend.

"I would like to talk to you, alone." Harry says and the eyes of the poor boy widen but he tries to hide his fear as he nods smiling.

"You can do that after dinner, darling." I say, patting his chest before I take Harry with me into the kitchen, leaving our daughter alone with her boyfriend. The crease between Harry's eyebrows still didn't disappear so I wrap my arms around his neck, looking up at him. He returns the embrace and looks down at me.

"I don't like him." Harry tells me sternly and my fingers trace his jawline.

"Of course you don't," I roll my eyes at him what seems to make Harry even angrier, "He is a sweet boy and didn't do anything wrong. You should give him a chance."

 "What if he hurts her?"

"Everyone has to go through a heartbreak."

"I could protect her from it if she listened to me and stopped dating him."

"Did you listen to my father when he told us we are not allowed to see us again? Oh wait, no you didn't."

 "That was different."

"Stop being like that and now give him a chance!" I say laughing, amused by his behaviour and kiss him. Harry's hands grab my thighs as he lifts me up so I have to wrap my legs around his waist. A squeal and a carefree laugh comes over my lips. I only hope that our daughter won't see us like that because I don't think she would like to see her parents making out in the kitchen while her boyfriend is over. Harry sits me down on the counter and my fingers go through his hair.

"I hope the dinner will be over soon."

"You really can't stand him, what?"

"I had something else in mind," He whispers against my ear before his head goes down to my neck and my cleavage, "I have a feeling he will hurt her, though." Harry mumbles and pecks my lips again.

The memories of Harry's and mine relationship go through my head. The break ups, the heartbreaks, the fights, the affection, the passion, the love. Everything that could possibly happen in a relationship did happen but we always found our way back to each other. I do know why Harry does not like the boy. He is afraid that her boyfriend is like Harry and puts her through the same things as Harry put me. I had to listen over and over again to Harry that he never meant to hurt me this much and I know that but it still seems to haunt him.

Now, years later, our daughter is old enough to have a boyfriend. She just is in this age and although Harry and I crest every mountain, the fear that our daughter has to suffer is still with him.

"You are allowed to kick his ass when he does hurt her, alright?" I mumble and peck his lips once more before I jump off the counter, feeling his hand when he squeezes my bum whereupon I let out a giggly squeal.

"I wouldn't ask for your permission to kick his ass if he did."

"I know." I laugh and we both take a seat on the dinner table.

My impression of our daughter's boyfriend just got better after the dinner. He is good in school, has nice friends, has a good relationship with his family. Could a mother wish for more? But Harry still has his eyebrows drawn together and I put my hand on his knee to calm him down. However, Harry's stern glare doesn't want to disappear from his face.

Even after her boyfriend left Harry still has a frown on his face, showing he is deep in thoughts. Our daughter is already in her room, probably talking with her friends about the evening today. Harry and I are laying on the couch, watching some TV but he is not as relaxed as he normally is.

 "Harry, what is wrong?"

"I don't know. This John boy is—"

"He is a lovely boy." I say, turning my head to him just to see him looking at me with raised eyebrows.

"Did you hear how he talked about his mother? Horrible."

"He seems to has a great relationship with his whole family..."

"Or did you hear how many girl friends he has? I don't think—"

"What are you trying to do here, huh? You can find as many things as you want what could make him look bad but that won't maker her stop liking him. And I like him as well. He is such a sweet boy."

"Don't you think she is too young for a boyfriend?" Harry asks me and I crawl over to him on the couch, snuggling to his side. His one arm wraps around me and he puts his chin on my head.

"You have to accept the fact that even our daughter raises and grows, becomes older and makes her own experiences. You can't protect her from anything and you can't tell her who she is allowed to like and who not. She becomes a young lady and we just have to accept that."

"I don't like that." Harry grumbles and sighs. I nod and my fingers stroke over his stomach.

"Don't you grant her to be loved by someone else? Wouldn't you like to see someone on her side who makes her just as happy as you make me?" I know I can get him with those words.

 "I make you happy?"

"Of course you do!" I laugh and tilt my head to see him looking down at me with a smile which I missed so much today. My fingers poke his dimples with thoughts clouding my mind.

"That's just because I'm the best husband you could ever have." He smiles proudly and I laugh, hitting his chest with my hand.

"Only because you have such a great wife who pulls the best out of you." I tease and Harry's smile gets so big I find myself smiling just because he is doing the same. Even over the years I did not stop loving his boyish smile or his cocky grin.

"I will give this John boy a chance."

 "Thank you."

"But only because I love my two girls." Harry says and pulls my body higher so he can kiss me without any difficulty.
