⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ THE AIR WAS heavily filled with tension - so thick you would have to saw a knife back and forth to cut it. The wall clock ticking was the second sound other than Melani flipping through the pages of the printed Doctor documents. Kielce stared at the opposite eggshell colored wall with his folded hand pushed against his lower mouth, feeling the familiar emotions sink deep into his soul.

Melani inched closer to him and sat beside him but about a foot away. He blinked slowly and breathed in deeply before evening it back to normal. "Can you say something about it?" Melani requested, lifting her eyes up to view the side of his face. Kielce sat back and folded his hands together in front of his crotch.

"I don't have anything to say." He admitted, shrugging his shoulders and placed the nape of his neck along the top of the couch.

"It seems like you're mad at me for it, Lece."

"I'm not."

"Sure seems like it. It's not my fault."

"I didn't say it was, Melani."

"Then talk about it!" She rose her voice up a notch, her accent seeping through. He robotically turned to her.

"Okay, you want to talk about it? Fine. You've had three miscarriages and we finally have confirmation that you're not fertile. We can't have kids and that's what I want." He vented before standing to his feet.

Kielce clutched his head in both hands with a firm grip as he paced the room slowly. He knew he was falling out of love with Melani and felt a child would fill that void that was starting to form. Their marriage wasn't built on that everlasting love and was coming apart - he knew that and deep down, Melani knew that's how he felt.

They had tried time and time again for a baby. It's as if she'd take months to even get pregnant and when she did, she'd lose it - no matter how careful she was in daily activities and diet.

He glanced over at her on the couch, seeing the conspicuous mixed feelings and emotions flushed across her face. He couldn't bare the reality of wanting to divorce her. But Melani only reminded him of his distasteful past that he's buried as the years went by.

Whenever he looked at her, the memories flooded back and he knew she was the thing that kept the door jammed of him shutting away his past. Maybe he never loved her, maybe he loved her actions at that time. She was the only positive of his life at that time, but since the circumstances has changed, it seems she's now the only negative.

Melani longed for a future with Kielce since what seemed like forever. After it seemed like every girl had their chance with him, she finally had hers. It was never easy. Coming from a traditional household, she felt she made a sacrifice of her parent's love for his. She was still deeply in love with him and feared most of him losing the same feeling. She felt she wasn't fertile but didn't want to face that reality, knowing that's what he wanted mostly at this point of their lives. Melani looked down at the papers from the Reproductive Endocrinologist , running her fingertip over the word printed in bold, red ink.

It smeared slowly as her tear fell upon it. She tucked her hair behind her ear and wiped her face. "M-my sister..she could surrogate." Her voice had became shaky so she cleared her throat while eyeing Kielce, awaiting for his response.

"It's not the same." He massaged his chin, his trimmed and shaved beard hairs scrapping against his fingers. He peeked Melani cries and sighed, looking towards the clock. "I'm bout to take a shower."

Melani nodded, poking her tongue into her jaw as he exited the room. She felt like her feelings were being abandoned and that she wasn't receiving the support she desired after news like this. She was aware he was hurt too but instead of coping together, she knew he was only pushing her away more.

Her fingers glided through her hair slowly while she had her eyes closed. Forced to push the issue to the side, she had wifely duties to do by starting dinner and getting clothes washed. "Do you have any clothes you want wash?"
