The next day, after school, Mackenzie, Alice, Jordan and I went back to the hospital to check on the woman that Mackenzie had saved the night before. At first the woman looked confused by her visitors, but then she seemed to recognize Mackenzie.
"You're that lady." she said to Mackenzie who was sitting beside the woman's bed. Jordan, Alice and I stood in the background. "You're the one that saved me from that...whatever it was." the woman said smiling.
"Yes, and the nurses say that you're recovering very well. You'll be out of here soon." Mackenzie said. The woman started to cry and Mackenzie comforted her.
"That's a relief." Jordan said.
"Yeah. I'm so glad for that lady." I said. "Mackenzie is so cool! She's actually a hero!" I said to Jordan.
"Yeah." Jordan said. "I guess making a contract does that to people." she said.
Even after Jordan said that, and seeing Mackenzie fight the demon and win, I still couldn't bring myself to make a decision about Alice's offer yet. A contract seemed like a huge responsibility and I wasn't sure yet if I was ready for that, even if it meant having powers of my own. But the thought of fighting for justice, and helping people, really made me consider it.
"Goodnight, Alice." I said when we were finally safely home in bed.
"Goodnight, Nora." she said, and I turned out the lights.
