you squeezed ethan's hand tightly as you walked out of the shops. he held two of your bags in his free hand while you held your purse in yours. as you walked towards your apartment, you saw a small crowd of girls surrounding someone. that someone turned out to be your ex-boyfriend, shawn mendes [a/n- just go with it haha].

"this is awkward." ethan muttered and clenched his jaw when shawn smiled and waved at you. despite you and shawn being exes, you managed to stay friends.

"be nice." you said to ethan and smiled at shawn as he approached you. he pulled you into a hug which you returned with one hand as ethan didn't let go of the other. shawn shook ethan's hand and your boyfriend smiled falsely at him. after conversing with you both for a few seconds, shawn returned to his fans.

you took a few photos with his fans who said that you and shawn were such a cute couple and that they missed you two together. you thanked them for their support but made it clear that you had a new boyfriend now. you could tell ethan was hurt by their comments, seeing as he was standing right next to you as they complimented yours and shawn's old relationship. he smiled at them but even a blind man could see that it was fake.

"don't overthink." you warned ethan when he fell silent. he had a look on his face that showed he was thinking intently about something. you didn't want him to be insecure and your relationship or focus on your old one with shawn.

"i'm not." he said quietly but you knew he was. you pulled him away from the fans and pressed your lips against his gently. you rested your head on his chest once the kiss ended.

"shawn's my ex and i certainly don't think of him in that way anymore." you reassured your boyfriend who smiled down at you.

"i know but those fans... they prefer you and shawn together." he said sadly making your heart break. the last thing you wanted was for him to second guess your relationship.

"well it's a good thing they don't get a say in our relationship." you said, smiling when a smile overtook ethan features. you squeezed his cheeks together with one hand and practically screamed at how cute he is. he gently smacked your hand away and you jokingly rubbed it while acting like he hurt you.

"oh sorry!" he rushed out and started placing small kisses on your hand. you watched with a look of admiration on your face. he clearly didn't hit your hand hard and he knew that but even the slight possibility of him hurting you was unacceptable to him. that's why you love him. he's the biggest sweetheart ever and he has never and will never intentionally hurt you. you giggled and stopped him.

"i was kidding." he stopped and his cheeks turned a bright red. you felt your insides melt when you saw his embarrassed face. "you honestly have a special place in my heart. like, i'm not trying to be cringy or whatever but you really are special to me."

"really?" he said with a hopeful look on his face, feeling the same towards you. he hadn't told you that he loves you yet but he does and you know he does. his past relationships hadn't worked out and he was very cautious about who he lets into his life. he knew you were different and you prove it to him everyday.
