my first impression of my new school: rambunctious.

about eight hundred kids are rushing around, some are boarders and some are day schoolers. i'm a day schooler. i don't know how half of these kids are saying goodbye to their parents and won't see them till christmas: i could barely survive a week away from my family when we did a school camp back home in spain.

there's shouting and laughing and even some crying from a girl behind me. the atmosphere makes me... anxious. my social skills regarding new people are atrocious.

"year ten newcomers, this way", a woman wearing blue rimmed glasses directs myself and about six or seven other kids away. "i'm mrs casimir. when i read out your name, step forward and your accomplice will collect you and show you to your first class"

oh, joy. someone to make uncomfortable with my awkwardness. i wriggle in my pristine private school uniform. mamá insisted i go to a nice one, like her school in france. and by nice, it seems she meant extremely... well, como se dice? fancy as fuck.

"jacques. jacques? jacques de caliente?"

she pronounces my name incorrectly. i squint at her, unimpressed.

"jax", i correct her softly. mrs casimir gives me a tight smile. a fit boy with a clean cut hairstyle and a white smile emerges from the group of kids who've been ordered to look after the newbies.

"of course. jax, this is your accomplice for the day; theodore"

"h-hello", i hold out my hand and smile at the ground nervously. theodore takes it, shaking my hand firmly. i glance up at him and he smiles. relief floods my chest from my abdomen to my neck.

maybe, just maybe, making friends won't be as hard as i thought.
