"They say never call someone back when they are leaving... it's inauspicious. However when I look back at all those years... I cannot help but feel guilty... as I didn't call him back... I just watched him leave... sometimes it feels like, I'm to blame for what has become of him..."

The young paladin (y/n) patiently waited for the prince of Lordaeron to arrive. The group of soldiers had already reached Strahnbrad, only Lord Uther and Arthas was left. Though (y/n) and Arthas were good friends, she tended to worry for him, more than she should. The female could never tell why, maybe because they were inseparable since they just fifteen year olds or maybe there were affections for him, unknown to her. (Y/n) would dismiss such childish thoughts, and besides he already had someone in his life.
The female paladin saw that Arthas had already arrived and he smiled at her just as their gaze met. Did he have his eyes on her for a while now? Watching her?. Maybe, but that thought alone made her heart beat faster and she couldn't help but blush.
"Greetings Prince Arthas, I'm honored to be able to fight by your side" she heartily smiled and lowered her head slightly in a bow
"Since when did I become such an important person? Come on, can the formalities, just call me by my name" Arthas laughed.
Truly his humble and kind personality was something to admire, she thought.
"I believe the village needs our assistance, as far as I know, there has been an attack by the orcs" (y/n) said, concerned
"The village is defenseless and if we don't do something quickly, there might be a great number of needless death" Arthas replied, the smile fading from his lips as he was just as concerned "I believe we should move...quick" he said and began to depart for the town. With (y/n) and the other soldiers following him.

A week after the defense of Strahnbrad and tracking a plague, (y/n) and Arthas have arrived in Alterac. The female didn't want to come here, she knew that Arthas was waiting for the sorceress Jaina who happens to be his-not-so-secret lover. It wouldn't be absolutely correct to say that she was jealous by the sorceress, it was actually quite the opposite, she was just as much as a good friend like the prince and (y/n) was happy to see an old friend return. Just today she felt, strange, as if invaded and having to lose a loved one.
"Would it really bother me if I see them both laughing, smiling and being the lovebirds they are?" (Y/n) sighed as she heard the prince rush to the sorceress when she arrived, everyone went to greet Jaina but the female paladin stood behind, looking at the union... feeling a sharp pain in her heart, a strange emptiness. Perhaps she had truly fallen for the sapphire eyed prince, and now she had begun to realize it as her (e/c) welled up with unshed tears.

"Lord Uther, by my right of succession and sovereignty of my crown, I hereby relieve you from your command and suspend your paladins from service" Arthas said, not even looking at the paladin, his gaze rested somewhere far away
"Arthas you can't just..." Jaina stood shocked
"It's done! Those of you who have the will to save this land, follow me. The rest of you... get out of my sight" he shouted, his gaze burning with rage.
Everyone left, even Jaina and that's what hurt him the most. The prince looked at his encampment, before walking towards it.
"I'm sorry to see all this... happen" (y/n) said, after a long moment of silence
"If they want to dwell in their stone walls and convince themselves that they are safe, then let them do it. I will fight for the safety of our homeland... even if I have to die for this" Arthas replied the anger in his voice didn't lessen a bit.
"I know how you are feeling, that you stand alone in this war and you must fight but there must be some other way then slaughtering these people" (y/n) said, trying to meet his gaze
"There isn't" Arthas was stubborn "we must destroy them or the plague will grow and it shall consume greater amounts of life... though" he finally looked at (y/n). The once happy and gentle eyes now slightly glowing with tears but mostly anger in them. "I appreciate that you stand here with me... if you weren't here today, I'd truly be alone. For that you have my thanks, (y/n)" Arthas smiled warmly at her
"No need to thank me... I shall stand by you even if the odds are against us. We are friends remember..." her voice grew a little heavy as her eyes welled up in tears, but the pure and reassuring smile persistent to die on her lips. Before she knew it, (y/n) found two robust arms surrounding her small form, almost picking her up from the ground into a hug as her head rested on Arthas's chest. The female could hear his heartbeat as she stood shocked, her eyes widened and mind confused
"Then promise to never leave... I would never be the same person as I am now without you (y/n)" Arthas said, she could detect grief in his voice, as if he'd break apart if she pushed him back and were to walk away now.
The female smiled and wrapped her arms around him "I promise... I will stand as your shield, no matter what or who the enemy is" she replied, tears trickling down her eyes.

The following evening, (y/n) couldn't believe if she gazed at the same Stratholme she has been seeing since her childhood. All the buildings burning in flames, the once welcoming scent now tainted with the smell of ash and blood, the laughter of children gone and all that could be heard were occasional cries from people who lost their families to their beloved prince. "(Y/n)?" she looked behind her to find the prince standing with his hammer clutched in his hands, his blue cape now stained and discolored with blood of the innocent
"I'm leaving for Northrend, the real enemy is yet to be slain..." he walked closer to the female paladin, who was watching him with sympathy and maybe fear in her (e/c) eyes
"I know what you are thinking... I'm such a disgusting creature, who doesn't deserve to..."
"I'm not, stop pushing yourself so hard Arthas" (y/n) said "what's done is done... we couldn't save them. But we can hunt down and kill the one who is the real cause for all of this" she shook her head and looked at the prince, who was staring at the fires blankly
"No... I will go, I don't want another to die because of me" he said, frowning
"Nothing will go wrong, trust me. Let me sail with you to Northrend!" the female insisted
"(Y/n) understand the situation! Someone needs to stay back and protect any other dead that might be roaming Lordaeron" Arthas said, almost shouting out the words, frowning.
The two simply stared at each other, the female stared at him with sympathy and grief, while it was clear that Arthas felt a deep disgust towards himself. They looked away. (Y/n) felt bad for him, he doesn't deserve to go through this, he simply did what he thought was right, she thought. The female looked at him, Arthas stood quiet and stared blankly, his smooth strands of blonde hair slowly moving in the wind. "He is broken... but still he looks so majestic..." she took a few steps closer to him, which he didn't seem to notice. While thoughts rushed in her head, unable to make a decision "if I do this... I'm probably going to spoil whatever friendship is left between us... should I tell him?... I shouldn't..." she couldn't bring herself to kiss him and confess that she loved him, they both stood silently beside each other until the last light of the sun faded.
"I must depart soon... the more I delay, the stronger these undead becomes" Arthas said, he turned his gaze back to her
"I... I understand..." she replied, hiding her emotions, appearing strong in front of him
"It's for your own good... to stay back here" he turned to her and held her hand
"Stay safe... your kingdom and your people... they need you" she closed her fingers around his hand, she wished if this moment would pause here, where they are standing hand in hand and eyes locked with each other's.
"I will, you take care of yourself now... I don't want to see a weak and ill paladin once I return. We will spar in the castle courtyard and this time I will win" Arthas smiled, yet it didn't cover the emotional pain he was suffering now
"You're all talk" she laughed but soon that faded when she felt his hand loosening on her, his eyes looking away from her as he began to walk away.
The female looked at him, he was walking away, the distance growing every moment, unsure if he'd ever return
"Art..."
"Don't stop me... let me go... let me save this land from doom (y/n)" Arthas said, looking at her from his shoulder "or die trying" he breathed the words quietly as he began his tread, slowly disappearing in the mists of the evening
"I... love you (y/n)..." Arthas said to himself when she was out of earshot, a single tear ran down his face as he walked away from the burning Stratholme.
(Y/n)'s heart sank as he left, he left, unknown to the feelings she felt for him
"My heart shall always be yours Arthas..." she said as his figure disappeared among the mists.
As the prince of Lordaeron left his friend on the cliff, confessing to themselves out of each other's hearing. Two souls never united, a love never confessed...
