Here's a song the listen too while you read. Its this books theme song.
Tell me what you think in the comments; happy reading! She tried to, so many times. Tried to escape the memories, the fear. But there it was, nagging like a mosquito who's never full, the flames flickering in the back of her mind.
Red and orange ribbons dancing behind her eyelids. The raging hot flames licking her skin.
She remembered it clearly.
So clearly. It was winter, meaning there were no dragon attacks in the dead of night; for the scaly beasts rested in their undiscovered homes. Warm and toasty and safe.
All but one, a small terrible terror, little, green and seemingly harmless in the cold winters early morning breeze. But its little cough set the haystack ablaze with red and yellow flames dancing back and forth, it was pretty and toasty for the moment as the small dragon sat in the blazing hay. Until the fire finally caught onto the house next to the haybale. It was slow but soon the whole left of the house was burning. The house in question belonged to a family of four; The father Spitlout, the mother Agnes, and two children. The youngest was a beefy boy, only around nine or ten years old, he was a little mean at some times but fairly good natured. The eldest was the pride of the family, Athen. A fourteen year old independent young viking. And its with the smell of smoke and the yelling of people outside that wakes the young girl. He eyes grow wide and her heart hammers loudly like Thor himself was striking it. Electric blue eyes darted around, seeing the door to her little brother room agape and free of flame. She grabbed her coat, wrapping the fur over her mouth so she did not inhale the smoke and stumbled quickly to the door. Snotlout met her there. "Athen! The back door is blocked- ahh!" He touched the wood of the wall at the end of his sentence, the hot splintering wood burnt his hand slightly.
"Come on, we can get out the side window!" Athen replied coughing and spluttering as she half carried her brother down the stairs and to the window. The two managed to smash it open and Snotlout climbed out, turning back to nothing.
"Athen? Athen where are you?" He called. The girl had gone back into the flames to find her mother. She searched in the seething heat, getting lost and turned around as every fiery wall looked the same. She couldn't hear, she could breath, she could hear nothing but crackling fire and burning wood.
She turned around and screamed. A scream of pure pain and suffering. As the red ribbons of flame licked her face, sizzling the flesh and burning into her face. Her side as well, felt these harsh and unmerciful burns. Leading for her scream to die in the throat as she fell harshly to her knees and her mind when numb."GET OUT OF MY WAY, THAT'S MY DAUGHTER" Spitlout yelled. Shoving Vikings of all heights and ages out of his way. As Thorl, one of the warriors of the village placed a limp body on the soft grass, away from the house that slowly burned to coals.
"Athen!" Snotlout called, squeezing through the crowd and falling down next to his role model of a sister. Spitlout brushed the hair from her face and winced, the echo of a gasp followed around the crowd of Vikings. Burns ran from her nose to her chin, a few scratches from splinters lay scattered across her body and face, one rather large one under her ear. As they found later, the burns also continued down her side and on both legs, though only a little. The village healer, an old crow named Gothi inspected the young girl and determined that she would be alright, giving some ointment to her family to treat her burns.
She never truly recovered, her mother was gone, her burns never healed and the scratches turned to scars as she watched the world change around her.——
"Man" Tuffnut said. "Isn't this place just AWESOME". The raven haired woman covered his mouth with her hand as a Dragon Hunter walked past, looking in their direction for a moment before walking onwards.
" Do you want to get us caught Tuffnut?" Athen hissed under her breath and peered out from behind the crates. Three hunters stood arguing a few metres to the left of them, the Jorgensen woman could take all three down easily but Hiccup Haddock had to go and partner her up with two Mutton Heads who couldn't tell their arms from their legs. Ruffnut huffed in offence.
"Well you know we have more experience with dragon hunters then you do so technically we know more then-"
"Over there! Dragon Riders!" She heard a hunter yell, seeing the stocky man pointing. Soon there were nearly fourteen hunters facing them down.
"Great, there goes the element of surprise" Athen grumbled.
"Surprise? Where? I love surprises, except if their bad, like a mace to the face...or you know... Arrow to the butt.." Tuffnut rambles.
"Yeah arrow to the butt would be pretty painful....we should try it when we get back to the edge!" Ruffnut laughs in return and the two bash heads.
"Will you two pay attention!" Athen screeched and drew her sword. A medium sized blade made of RazorWhip spikes, sharp and deadly, just the way she liked it.She yelled as one of the hunters attacked her with an axe, she side stepped skillfully and placed her hands on the ground, spinning and kicking her leg out, tripping the hunter before she knocked him out. Another two came straight at her and she drew an axe from her back. Meeting the sword of one before kicking his chest and he fell back, Athen manage to turn just as the other hunger attacked. She smashed her axe of his head and he toppled to the ground. The other hunters were now a little wary of her. She raised her slim fingers to her lips and a sharp loud whistle followed, along with a screech and a blast as the yellow eyed RazorWhip blasted blue plasma fire at the remaining Hunter's. As did Barf and Belch, causing Athen to freeze up a little and step away.
"Right, right, fire bad, sorry!" Ruffnut called carelessly.
Gallows landed quickly on the ground, her metal like scales clinking. Gallows was not the same as other dragons. She was physically unable to produce flame, instead she spews some strange plasma mix, it worked and that's what mattered, it caused a whole lot of damage.
The usual fast paced sound of a certain black dragon pierced the air as a plasma blast hit the last few hunters. Hiccup and Toothless landed.
"What was that! You were supposed to SNEAK in!" He exclaimed loudly. Athen rolled her eyes and pointed back at the twins.
"SOME people can't keep their mouth shut" she hissed and the one legged teen and young adult walked up the the main tent."Viggo should be in here" Hiccup said.
"And if he's not?" Athen offered. Hiccup paused and thought for a moment.
"Then we will deal with it then" he replied and pushed the tent flap open. At the desk sat a man about Athen's age, looking straight at them, his one blind eyes glinting in the light. His burns almost matches her own.
"Ah my dear Hiccup, lovely to see you again"
