"Damn ye, you are a sneaking puppy, and so are all those who will submit to be governed by laws which rich men have made for their own security."

-Black Sam

As fast as Christmas arrived, so did the 30th of December. It was Frank Wayde's party that Ava had to attend to with Sam, who was her date.

Her date.

Whenever she thought about it, it turned her mind to mush and made her heart thump like a rabbit.

The whole evening was spent running around the apartment with Nora, first it was them in the bedroom deciding what to wear with all the dresses out of closet, mounting on the bed. Then it was the hair, then it was the simple makeup in the bathroom, it went on and on just to get Ava prepared.

"I'm nervous." Ava bounced her leg up and down as she sat on the closed toilet seat while Nora fixed her hair for the final touch.

A cheshire grin spread across Nora's rosy lips.

"And why is that?" Nora asked light heartedly.

Ava groaned before puffing out her cheeks, "I-I don't know."

"You know, I've never seen you this nervous before." Nora grabbed Ava by her hands and forced the woman to stand up before brushing over her dress. "Don't worry you look fine, love. Just-"

The doorbell erupting thru the house startled Ava, making her clutch her chest as she exhaled nervously.

Nora's soft hands rubbed her arms up and down before offering her motherly smile, "just go and have fun, okay? Just don't do anything stupid."

Her friend shoved her out of the bathroom with an encouraging push and before Ava opened the door, she breathed in and out, hoping that it would calm her racing heart and stirring stomach. It didn't.

Sam's fidgeting fingers came to a halt when his eyes landed on Ava. His lips parted as his eyes traveled from her head to her toes.

Her wavy brunette hair made his heart ache. Her cat eyes made her brown eyes look like a pool of honey. Her painted red lips made the butterflies in his stomach flutter their wings in synchronization. Her navy blue, silky dress that hugged her chest and waist perfectly and pooled around her legs, made Sam think if the color blue was going to be his favourite color.

But as his eyes landed on the sun necklace around her neck that he gave her on Christmas, it sent the corners of his lips upwards as a warm blanket engulfed his heart.

Ava watched the man indulge her as she did the same too.

His sleek chocolate hair showed off his features as always, and as always, Ava loved how he tidied up his hair. His black tux laid perfectly on his figure, making her hold back her wild thoughts.

As the two of them locked eyes, they couldn't help but smile at the other.

Sam stepped in the apartment, never breaking eye contact with Ava, speaking softly. "Hi."

"Hi yourself." Ava couldn't help but feel like she was a young teen, falling head over heels for the bad boy as she spoke to Sam. She also couldn't help but feel silly too.

Sam took another look at her before his familiar boyish grin came into sight once again, "Ava, sweetheart, you look drop-dead-gorgeous." The man whistled, shaking his head in disbelief.
