Chapter 02 | A Wolf's Killing Spree

"AND SINCE WHEN were the feds concerned with cases like these?" The sheriff asks, and his Western accent flows out from his speech.

"Nothing much going on, thought we'd pitch in." I answer smoothly. Sheriffs have always been skeptical of the FBI, don't ask me why. If they're having one of those cat fights, well, cry a river, build a bridge, and get over it. Thinking out all the possible skeptical inquiries they could ask is part of posing as an agent.

I bit my lip as my stomach yelled at me for the second time today. Crap, forgot to eat breakfast.

I know, I know. How does someone forget to eat breakfast, right?

I'm at the Sioux Falls Sheriff Department gathering data from the reports. There has been a report of a teenage pop star who's records boomed successfully over a span of one month. Her insides were found torn to shreds just yesterday evening. Also another report of a man around his late 50's who just won the lottery a few weeks back was also found torn to bits and pieces this morning. Sheriffs suggest a wild wolf is on the lose.

Basically, the sheriffs are saying a wolf went on a killing spree.

Huffing, he hands me the folder of reports, I mutter out a  muffled thanks and proceed to exit his office. To say that his office was suffocating and suffused with tension was an understatement. That sheriff needs to loosen up and have a drink or two.

Or am I just delirious?

I'm greeted by gruesome pictures of the two dead bodies as I flip open the folder. They weren't kidding when the newspaper said that both bodies were torn to shreds. Blood was splattered everywhere. Limbs here, limbs there.

I scurry as fast as I can to get out of the department to start working on the case. The sooner I do it, the faster it gets done. I take a sharp left and I collide against a hard surface.

"Oof!"

I groan when a sharp pain throbs in my head. I rub the area of pain with my hand and the other picking up the reports that conveniently decided to grow some wings and fly around everywhere. I think it must be a nice fly up there in the air, because just as I could get a hold of one, it slips out of my fingers and fly somewhere else.

"Sorry about that." A deep voice apologizes. I look up to see a familiar pair of green eyes staring at me and I can't identify the emotion shaping in his face. After seconds of staring at each other, his eyes widen. "Hey! You're that singing girl!"

I roll my eyes. "Yeah, yeah. It's me." he narrows his eyes at me and rakes my body up and down, "Dean, right?"

He nods, and I turn to the taller brother who has been awkwardly shuffling his feet for the last few seconds. "And Sam?"

"That's my name."

"What are you doing here?" I ask, taking a glance at their attire. With the rundown clothes and the choice of motel they were staying in, I grew a bit suspicious. Being a special has a good pay, why stay in such said motel? They look sharper right now, suits and all. I piece all this together. Deciding to test my curiosity, I ask, "You aren't a real officer, are you?"

I see Dean's brow twitch before lets out a dry laugh, grabbing me by the collar. I find myself outside the department, as he dragged me all the way outside. I wrinkled my nose atthe disgusting smell of trash on the corners that instantly fill my nostrils. He gave me no time to whine when he pushes me up to the wall, the sharp edges of the bricks scrapes my skin in the process through the thin piece of cloth I'm wearing.

"Dean! What exactly are you doing?!"

"Shoot now, talk later, Sammy."

"Leave her alone, Dean."

He ignores Sam's remark and his green eyes meet my blue ones. "Christo".

A few silent seconds pass, and I don't know what came over me, but I laugh like a maniac. The sight is causing me serious hysteria, and I might as well laugh to death. They both stare at me incredulously like I grew two heads as Dean's grip tightens on my neck. "Hunters, eh?" Their facial features visibly stiffen, especially Sam, who's face is scrunching up. I find all this playing quite hilarious.

Is it wise to blow up my cover right away when I had just met these two douches?

Ehrmm, yeah I guess it probably is.

Okay, crap.

In the heat of the moment, I kick Dean on the lower abdomen. With the impact, he lets out a cough. Distracted, his grip losens on me. I yank away from his hold, but falling on the floor pooled with dirty puddles. I whip out the knife from the heel of my shoe and point it at him. I smile as the knife glints with pride under the sun's rays. Adrenaline starts pumping through my veins and the familiar rush of thrill fills me once again. I could sing with joy! Looks who's coughing like a squirrel on crack!

Before I could threaten him, a pair of muscular arm wrap around my neck and the knife falls from my hand. I try to wiggle my way out of the strong arms but the grip merely strengthened up. I look up at Sam who's arms are still wrapped tightly on my neck, but his gaze focuses on Dean who has regained his composure, my knife now his hands and now half-striding half-running  towards our direction.

The funny thing is though, his eye sockets ready to bludgeon out of his eyes.

"Hey!" I yell. "Has your mother not taught you not to run with sharp, pointy objects?"

He growls.

Uh, Lacking sense of humor much?

He grazes the tip of the sharp edge over my cheek, and I felt a bit of warm substance pooling down my cheek. Shit, it hurts. I bite my inner cheek, refusing to show any pain.

"Shut up, sweetheart. Don't you dare talk about my mom like that. The jig is up, now who sent you?"

No, they did not just seriously accuse me of false statements. They did not just do that! How rude can they be?!

"Sent me to what!?" I shriek.

"To spy on us!"

"No one, did! You're getting on my nerves. Wait till I poke y'all with mah voodoo dolls—especially made for you little idjits."

"Dream on, sweetheart." He takes a glance up at Sam for a quick moment, and returns his gaze back at me. "And you're a hunter?"

"None of your beeswax."

He clicks his tongue in annoyance and he takes a few steps back away from me. He throws the knife on the ground and finally, Sam lets go of me. "You stay away from us, lady! If you ever pop out of nowhere again I'm not gonna hesitate to kill ya! Got it?" He hisses, emphasising each word.

What i caught on, however, was the vein pulsating at the side of his neck. What just happened hadn't fazed me by The slightest, but seeing him worked up over lil ol me is funny.

I keep my chin up, "Eat me."

He closes his eyes with his fist clenched and his lips are pursed. He takes a deep breath and exhales deeply, obviously controlling himself. More veins on his forehead are popping out visibly, and he lets out another long sigh. At least someone taught the beast breathing exercises.

"Let's go, Sam." He mutters, and they don't bother sparing me one last glance as they walk away, leaving me alone on the dark alley.

Hmmm, All this girl drama has me craving for a bacon cheeseburger.
