CHAPTER EIGHT

It's been almost a week since that incident happened. We didn't talk. I only heard him talking to his mom. The next day when that happened I was in the hall doing clean up stuff when he came out of his room, looking all messed up.

He looked at me for a few seconds and I felt nervousness was taking over me and felt the urge to leave. Without looking at him I started leaving the hall while his voices tried to stop me. He called my name three-four times but that didn't made me turn towards him.

These few days ammi had been sick too. She just keeps saying that she don't have much time to live. She keeps repeating a sentence.

"If I or Shehryaar ever hurt you, please forgive us."

Somehow this thought was already killing me, her words were constantly ranging in my head these days. I sometimes doubt that somewhere deep down she knows what's happening in the house, what's in between me and him.

There's no between in us. We're two people on separate ways.

At least I'm happy that Shehryaar and I are not talking, that's the only thing I wanted the least after that. Brushing all the thoughts away I picked myself up and dragged to the washroom to perform my ablution. Coming inside the room I saw Shehryaar standing at the door, leaning against it.

"We have to talk." he said, his voice gentle but firm. I lowered my eyes. "Please it's important. It's about ammi."

"After I complete my prayer." he nodded and left the room asking me to come in the hall to talk.

I finished my prayer, completed my dua peacefully and kept the prayer mat neatly on the side table.

On going out I saw his gaze fell on me and I felt uncomfortable. I didn't want him to feel my nervousness. I had to stay strong. He patted the space next beside him as he was sitting on a double seater while I sat on the single seater sofa.

He looked at me with wide eyes a little. "I asked you sit here. Why didn't you?" he said, his voice wasn't full of anger rather it was a calm one. It felt like he is depressed. He needs something. He needs someone to talk. He felt... sad.

"I don't want to be near you." I blurted what I had in my mind. "I can't be near you, I don't trust you. And that's the truth and I guess you are aware of it very well."

He just kept quite like something is eating him up but he can not stop it.

"Look, ammi is really not well. These days all she talk about is to seek her forgiveness if she did anything wrong. She keeps telling me that she's about to leave us forever. I've contacted a few more great doctors of the city and they also gave their answers. They said... she... she can't survive not more than a month." he said all of it looking down in one go, his voice shaky. His eyes reflected and I assumed that it's his tears. Tears formed up in my eyes hearing his words.

"After losing dad, I can't... I can't lose her. She's my only reason to live now." with that a tear rolled down his eye.

"You have to let it all out. Cry. Don't stop these tears." I said trying to comfort him a bit but I guess that didn't work. His gaze still at the floor, he didn't seemed to be mentally present here.

"They were my only happiness. The only people whom I loved till death. Why are they leaving me? Am I that bad?" he whispered but it was pretty enough for me to hear.

"She says the same things to me. I don't know why she's doing that these days. I... I don't want to lose her either. She is my only friend here. I have no one to talk with apart from her. She's just like my mom. I can't afford to lose another mom." my voice shaking and tears start flowing. I began sobbing. I broke down at the thought of her leaving me, till her words again in my head.

"If I or Shehryaar ever hurt you, please forgive us."

There was silence. My tears stopped and I looked up at him. He was still there with his hand holding his head, his elbows on his knees. I heard him sniffing and I decided to leave him alone. He needs time.

I stood up and he immediately looked at me. His eyes red, unreadable. He didn't say anything just keep looking at me while I looked everywhere except him. I couldn't bare anymore, I had to leave.

I turned and his voice startled in my ears. More like a plea.

"Saba?"

I turned to him again. He was still blank. I raised my eyebrows to let him continue and he took a deep breath tearing his gaze away from me.

"I'm sorry." with that he stood up and left the room before I left.
