No Social Skills

Taking a break from the love triangles ,let's talk about socially awkward characters.
Now there are a number of reasons why a character is socially awkward: autism, shy to the point they can't even function around people they aren't familiar with, cultural barriers, never had a social interaction in their entire life, etc. It's normally used as a source of humor for miscommunications or turning points in a plot that basically could make or break a country because they accidentally insulted someone. Hell the Beast from Beauty and the Beast can fit into this trope due to his years in isolation.

This doesn't necessarily mean they have no social skills, it's just limited. They can be well adept in government but the moment you talk sports its game over for them. Or they are well versed in high society, but the moment they get a job, they may not know how certain things work due to everything just being done for them. Going back to autism, some people with it don't understand certain social cues , so asking them a question that requires an honest answer may result in something socially inappropriate and hurt feeling which plays into the Brutally Honest trope that is often confused with the Jerkass trope.

In anime and manga, my favorite example of this is Gaara from the Naruto series. He spent most of his childhood isolated from people and the person who actually cared about him was ordered to kill him, but we all seen how that worked out. Over the years, he develops some sort of social skill due to him being the Kazekage, but was oblivious to Shikamaru and his sister Temari dating. And not to mention that his fiance (they never marry though) points this out as well that his one on one skills needs some work.

Mater from the Pixar films. He's socially awkward and socially inept. He has a hard time communicating his thoughts and feelings to others and doesn't know what topics to talk about in front of other people. He has a hard time with others' opinions too, either not understanding them or thinking that if they don't like his friend they must be bad people. He sometimes says inappropriate things at the wrong times and unintentionally embarrasses his friends in public places when talking to new people. It's been speculated that he might be on the autism spectrum.

Superboy from the animated series Young Justice is a clone of Superman who was grown in 16 weeks and fed information via telepathic genomorphs. Suffice to say he finds it difficult to deal with people, particularly his new teammates, when he's just beginning to adjust to life outside of CADMUS. Let's be honest here, he does adjust but has those moments where foot in mouth is present.

Parker from Leverage. Quite possibly the world's greatest cat burglar; requires cheat sheets and extensive coaching to carry on a passing-for-normal conversation, and doesn't see why her male teammates freak out whenever she whips her shirt off in front of them to execute a quick-change. As a child, she thought that being buried alive was an appropriate way to get over her fear of the dark. As an adult, she compared it to Eliot locking himself in a shed for a few nights to get over his claustrophobia. "That's NOT the same thing. What's wrong with you?" This, however, is explained to the viewers that she has Asperger's.

In Assassin's Creed III, Connor Kenway, aka Ratonhnhaké:ton, is the best example when it comes to cultural barriers. It also fall under Adorkable( more on it later). He doesn't really grasp the colonial culture, especially when it comes to how the women are treated seeing how many Native American cultures are matriarchies and often hold high positions within their own communities.

There are many forms of media that has at least one person that is clueless to the opposite sex. And I mean, they have no idea how to even talk to them without saying something sexist and yes, it goes both ways. It could be due to the fact they were surrounded by nothing but their gender. Hell Spartan women had to cut their hair in order for their husband to sleep with them after being away for a while...don't look to deep on that.

Writing socially awkward characters can be a bit tricky for many reasons. One being the reason behind the awkwardness. Writing a character with some sort of mental or neurological illness is hard all on its own due to the amount of research that many writers on Wattpad omitts. Hell, cultural barriers require the same amount of research but people just go off of what they see on tv. I'm not saying all, just some.
