It had been years since you were thrown off the plank.

You belonged to a band of pirates, and because you argued with the Captain, he had you kicked out into the sea. Somehow, you survived that boisterous sea and when you came to, you found yourself on the shore of an island you didn't know.

You stayed with the locals there, made friends there, and before you knew it, you were living there. To earn money, you became a fisherman. Despite the years passing, the pirate-y twang in your voice stuck to you and came out at random times. It was amusing since you had nothing to do with pirates anymore, now that you were just a fisherman.

You were out in the sea, letting your cast net catch some fish. A great tug almost toppled your boat over, but you thankfully managed to keep it balanced with your legs. You pulled in the net, wondering why it was unusually heavy.

"Maybe 'tis a great bounty of fish!" you exclaimed under your breath as you tried to pull the heavy net. Soon enough, with much difficulty, you pulled the net and in fell an odd creature you've never seen before.

It had the upper body of a woman, a tail of a fish, long, silvery white hair, pale skin, and a pair of scrawny arms. The creature was lying face down on the floor of your boat, and you shrieked.

"Good riddance! I've done caught me a young missus with a fishtail!" you said loudly, which made the creature twitch a little.

The creature struggled to get up, and you offered to grab its arms to help her sit up. She raised her head and looked at you, and the first thing you noticed was her eyes. They were two colors; the upper halves were red, and the lower halves were blue, which was very odd. She also had a healed scar on her cheek.

"A human!" she gasped, her pretty eyes widening.

"What?" you asked as you were still gently holding her arm.

"I can't be seen with a human!" she said as she tried to scramble out of the boat, but you held her tighter.

"Please stay a while. I'd like to ask you some things." You pleaded.

She looked into your earnest eyes for a moment and then obliged. You let her arm for go and then asked her,

"First of all, lady, what in blue blazes are ya?"

"I'm a mermaid." She replied, collecting her silver hair to the front and combing it. You almost didn't hear her response since you were admiring how beautiful she was.

"A mermaid?" you quipped, "I ain't never seen a mermaid round these parts before... or ever in my life."

"Our species are rare, and because of that, we don't show ourselves to humans," She said, "Lest they capture us and torture us for their own selfish benefit. We especially steer clear of pirates, since they believe that a scale of a mermaid or a strand of her hair would bring good luck."

"A tough life you've got there, missus." You sat back and sighed, "I was once a pirate too, I'll have you know."

Her eyes widened in alarm, but she stayed put and listened.

"M' Captain was looking real hard for a mermaid with long silver hair like yours." You said, "He had seen 'er once an' tried to capture 'er, but luckily, she escaped and disappeared."

"It was me." She said with a somber face, and you looked at her with a grin.

"Glad yer doin' okay, missus." You said as you stood up and collected your net, "May I know your name?"

"... Julchen." She said after a moment's hesitation.

"What a beautifully rare name. And I'm ____." You smiled widely at her and tipped your straw hat, "You'd better hurry and be on your way, missus. I pray you won't be pursued by anybody."
