You could recognize the faint sense of magic and the wafting scent of pipeweed anywhere. Grinning excitedly, you swam to the surface of your river with high spirits. Just as you almost surfaced, you could see the faint outlines of figures beside the familiar shadow of your old friend Gandalf.

Due to hunters and orcs recently passing through your territory, you cautiously made your way up to the surface of the water. At first glance, the company could only tell that you were an average female, at least they thought so until you sat on the river bank.

Hoisting yourself onto the rocky shore of your river, you could audibly hear the gasps of the dwarves around you. It didn't surprise you too much, after all- it wasn't a normal occurrence to run into a mermaid, especially in a forest river. They curiously stared over your (f/c) shiny tail, your glistening (h/l) (h/c) sitting on your dripping shoulders, and the small cautious glances your (e/c) cast towards the company.

"And that is why we have come onto your humble territory. (Y/n), we need as much information as you are able to give us." Nodding in understanding, you told what you had recently experienced. The company had all settled down on the rocks to listen to you, all except one.

Thorin couldn't stop staring at you as you explained the recent movements of a pack of orcs. Trying to stay focused on the info you were giving, he forced himself to sit down before his feet carried him to you.

By the time you had finished speaking, it was as if you were having a staring contest with the handsome dwarf. Wait- handsome? Your cheeks flushed and you slightly shook your head, you didn't understand why these thoughts of the unknown dwarf raced through your mind.

As the company packed up, your mystery dwarf slowly walked up to you with his burly arms crossed over his armored chest and his icy blue eyes staring deeply into yours. Clearing his voice he knew he had to talk to you, at least just once.

"I would like to thank you for the heads up you gave my company and I about the orcs, it was quite the pleasure meeting you miss (y/n)." He stretched out his hand for you to take as you shyly smiled at him.

"The pleasure is all mine, master...?" He took your hand to kiss it when your hand rushed with the feeling of sparks and warmth as if your hand had fallen asleep and it was waking up. His eyes visibly widened as you both pulled your hands back in shock. He let himself grin widely at the new discovery, gently he grabbed your hand once more as the sparks flew between you too. "Thorin, Thorin Oakensheild. I hope I can see you again, miss (y/n)."

You sat there stunned as you let your hand fall onto your tail, watching as he glanced at you every now and then while he packed. Sliding back into the water, you called for Gandalf. Strolling over to sit on the rock you previously sat on he looked at you as he smoked his pipe.

Taking a deep breath and steeling your nerves you stared him down, "I need you to give me legs." The smoke that was previously creating butterflies billowed out of his nose and mouth as he coughed, your question absolutely taking him by surprise. With his eyes slightly watering, he looked at you quizzically. "And why would I change you from your natural form?" You grinned as you told him  what your plan was and how you would use this new form.

                                ----

It was getting darker by the minute as the company finally stopped walking to camp down for the night. "Bombur, prepare whatever food you have. Fili and Kili, find some firewood. I'll be taking the first watch and then Dwalin." A collection of relieved sighs and the sound of packs being unbuckled rang through the forest, silencing the sounds of leaves crunching a few feet away.

Thorin huffed as he sat down on a fallen log, a long tired sigh escaping his mouth as he watched the surrounding forest. In the darkness of the shadows of the trees, he could make out a figure watching them from their hiding place. Standing up fast, Thorin rushed into the bush to confront the figure, his sword drawn and raised above his head.

He abruptly stopped his swing and let his sword fall to the ground as he stared at you with his mouth open. You stood before him with a smile and legs of your own, but you were definitely missing clothes of your own. In fact, you were as clothless as a newborn babe, and the darkness of the night hid his fiery colored cheeks.

It didn't take more than a few seconds for the company to come rushing to the aid of their king with weapons drawn, but everyone had stopped abruptly at the sight of you. "Goodness girl take my jacket!" Bofur shouted, Ori was being shielded by Dori and poor Bilbo had passed out on the grass in embarrassment while Dwalin simply put his axes back and laughed. Every dwarf shoved jackets and shirts towards you, but only one got to give you clothes.

"If anyone is to give her clothes it will be me, now all of you go on back to camp and give her some privacy!" Thorin's deep-voice boomed out, causing the dwarves to scramble back to the camp before his temper started to rise further. He turned around and took off his fur coat as well as his shirt, holding it out for you to take as he looked up towards the moon.

"Thank you, Thorin." You said, putting on the shirt that still radiated his body heat onto your bare skin while the fur cloak was practically like a furnace. You knew it was usual to wear clothes for non-water folk, but you would've never guessed they would've made such a fuss out of it. Tapping him as you were fully covered, he turned to you with his hands behind his back.

You could slightly see a pink tint hiding under his beard, his eyes scanning at how his jacket and shirt hung from your body. "Why only let me take your clothes and not those of the others?" You questioned, earning a small smile from him.

"You felt it didn't you? The sparks are what I speak of. I knew from the moment I laid my eyes on you at the river I knew you were my One, and I could not let anyone put their clothes on your naked...body." He grumbled out, his large calloused hand reaching to take yours.

"So that is what dwarves call it... we call ours soulmates. I had asked Gandalf to give me this form on land and be able to turn into my natural state in the water, just so I could be with you. I couldn't let you go now that I met you. I may be a mermaid, but land won't stop me from chasing after you, Thorin Oakensheild."

He let out a hearty laugh that he hadn't let out in years, and in a strange twist of destiny and fate, the king of Erebor fell in love with a mermaid of the forests; all started by the knowing sparks by the water of a river.
