Saint Michael the Archangel isn't really a saint because he is an angel but we call him one because we can pray to him and ask for his intercession. He is the leader of all angels and the army of God. This is why he is called an "Archangel". His four main responsibilities (or offices) are :
1. Combat Satan (which he will do on the day of judgment when it is the end of the world)
2. Escort the faithful to heaven at their hour of death
3. Be a champion of all Christians and the Church
4. Call everyone from life on Earth to their heavenly judgement
We don't know a ton about St. Michael the Archangel but he is referenced in the Bible more than once. He's mentioned in Daniel where the first time was to help him and the second with regard at the end times of the world when he will stance for the "children of thy people".
He is mentioned in the Epistle of St. Jude where he guards the tombs of Moses and Eve and has fought with Satan over the body of Moses.
His last mention in the Bible is in Revelation where he and the angels will battle the dragon (aka the devil). He is implied in other parts such as "the angel" , the ones who defends the gate to Paradise, the one who defends against Balaam, and the one "who routed the army of Sennacherib". The other two angels that we know of are Raphael (Chapter 13) and Gabriel (Chapter 14).
St. Michael the archangel has appeared to several people one being St. Joan of Arc (Chapter 15).
St. Michael the Archangel is often depicted with his foot on the devil's head because he will defeat the devil during the final battle between the devil and the angels and saints.
