St. Raphael is one of the 7 archangels who stand before the throne of the Lord. He is mentioned by name in the Book of Tobit and his name means "God heals". It's because he healed the earth when it was full of the sins of the fallen angels in the book of Enoch.

Raphael is disguised as a human in the Book of Tobit and traveled with Tobit's son, Tobiah. He declares to Tobit that he was sent by the Lord to heal his blindness and deliver Sarah, Tobiah's wife, from the demon Asmodeus. This demon killed every man Sarah married on the night of the wedding. Raphael guided Tobiah and taught him how to safely enter the marriage with Sarah. He also restored Tobit's eyesight.

Healing powers by angels mentioned in the bible are usually attributed to Raphael because of his association with them.

His feast day is celebrated with St. Michael the Archangel (Chapter 10) and St. Gabriel (Chapter 14).

Feast Day: September 29

Patron of: Travelers, the blind, bodily ills
