I faced off with Carlisle as the others watched on. Esme was desolate. Emmett was blank. He sat next to Rosalie who seemed almost irritated. Jasper isolated himself in a corner.

"No," Carlisle said. "We promised Edward."

"But she won't do well without us," I protested. "I get flashes of her, but they're unclear."

"Forget her," Rosalie was on Carlisle's side, "let's drag Edward home."

"He'll come back when he's ready," Esme said to Rosalie. "After Bella moves on."

"Yes," Carlisle said to Esme. "When she's living her life, safe from danger-"

"You mean safe from us," Jasper interrupted with self-contempt.

I wrapped an arm around him soothingly.

"And when will that be?" Rosalie asked me.

"Can you see him, Alice?" Emmett asked me.

They all turned to me. I closed my eyes, trying to get a lock on Edward. I saw Edward high on a mountaintop standing still, face agonized. Suddenly, he started running, like he was trying to
outrun his memories, faster and faster. He raced toward a cliff; a ravine hundreds of feet below. Edward didn't slow, just blasted forward faster; then he leaped off the cliff, floating, but the pain stays with him. Edward landed hard on the other side of the ravine.

I opened my eyes. "The only decision he's made is to be alone."
