Reader's POV

Ironically, in my predicament I was feeling more agitation than trepidation. This... boy had dozens of lackeys at his disposal, and he directed them all to focus on hunting down one person?

I couldn't puzzle out his reasoning for doing so, and I didn't have an excess amount of time to try to figure him out. There were much more pressing matters at hand.

I scrupulously surveyed the wooden cage I'd been unceremoniously placed in. I searched relentlessly for a weak spot in the cage. No such luck.

I stared ahead at the two boys in front of the cage that imprisoned me. They acted as sentries, ensuring that I remained confined. The boy on my right was the oldest of the two. He appeared to be very stern and, from what I'd observed earlier in the evening, staunchly supportive of Pan.

The boy on my left was clearly the younger of the two. If his appearance didn't give it away, then certainly his visible nervousness and skittish behavior would have.

The older boy turned to the younger one. "Keep a close eye on the prisoner. There's something I have to do." He said vaguely, staring out towards the woods. His words evoked a strong sense of hope. Would this be my chance to escape?

"But what if she-," The younger boy began but was quickly cut off as the older boy interjected.

"Watch her!" He snapped. The younger boy recoiled in fear, barely having time to recover as the older boy stalked off into the woods.

I could see that the younger boy was unsure of himself and extremely nervous to be entrusted with the responsibility of watching me. I truly did feel bad for him. This didn't seem like the best place to reside for someone so young.

I inched closer to the front of the cage. "Hello." He stared at me in surprise. I could tell that he was nervous, but also a bit awe-stricken. I doubt he expected that he'd be the sole sentry of the prisoner and having a conversation with her all in the same night.

"Hi." He responded timidly.

"I really hate to ask you this, but would you mind letting me go?" I requested, a plan rapidly assembling in my mind.

His eyes darted around anxiously before settling on my own. "I can't!" He whispered fearfully.

My heart constricted painfully at the panic in his voice. I took great care to ensure that my tone was as soothing as possible, so as to not cause him anymore grief than he was already experiencing.

"I know you're worried about Pan finding out. Just say that you heard something in the woods and went to go and investigate." I told him, supplying him with the excuse he would need.

He looked away, uncertain. "I don't know."

I internally sighed and knelt down to eye-level with the boy. "If  it comes down to it, you can just tell him that the other boy left first." I replied, hoping that it would be enough to sway him.

Numerous emotions flickered across his face before he finally settled on one: Resolve.

"I'll help you escape," he whispered, "but you have to go. Quickly."

I nodded my head, tensing up as he began to unlock the cage. I was instantly paranoid that someone would catch him, but no such thing happened. He stared up at me one last time before unlocking the cage.

He didn't say anything else, but his actions were more than enough. The cage door swung open and I was instantly flying through the forest.

The hunt continues.
