“Maybe it’s just not going to work.” Brendan said quietly with tears in his eyes. You had been fighting since he got home from practice and you knew this is where it was heading, but to hear the words come out of his mouth made you feel like someone punched you right in the gut.

“Yeah, maybe.” You said as you grabbed your keys and walked out the door.

5 months later…

You walked into the coffee shop in a rush. You were already late for class and you were hoping the line wasn’t too long. Not paying attention, you smacked right into what felt like a brick wall.

“Ugh.” You said to yourself, “I’m so sorry I wasn’t paying attention!” you said to the figure in front of you. Your eyes travelled up until you met the stranger’s face, except it wasn’t a stranger at all.

“Y/N.” Brendan said staring at you.

“Brendan.” You said with the same feeling in your stomach that you had when you left.

“How are you?”

“I’m good. How are you?” you faked a smile. Seeing his face brought up all of the feelings that you had worked so hard to forget about. You still loved Brendan and honestly nothing had really changed in these last 5 months. You’d watch him on the TV playing his heart out and you wished that you were there to celebrate every win and console him with every loss. You thought about him often and wondered if he ever thought of you.

“I’m ok.” He said almost sadly. “Do you have time to sit down and catch up? I’d love that.” He said with a hopeful smile.

“Uh, I have a class—“ You looked down at your watch. You were already late for class and by the time you got to campus it would be almost over, “Actually, nevermind. I have time if you do.” You smiled.

You both waited in line for your coffee and talked about little things that were happening in your lives. When you got up to the counter Brendan ordered his drink and immediately ordered your favorite drink. He paused and looked at you, “You still drink that, right?” He said as his cheeks flushed a little.

“Yes.” You smiled, “I can pay for my drink though, you don’t have to do that.”

“It’s my pleasure.” He said handing his card over to pay.

After you got your drinks you sat down at a nearby table and started talking and laughing about everything and anything. Before you knew it you had been talking for over two hours.

“Sometimes I think about what would have happened if I didn’t let you walk out the door that day.” Brendan said to you suddenly, catching you off guard.

“What do you mean?”

“If I would have stopped you 5 months ago. Told you how I really felt instead of being a coward and letting you go. I’ve missed this so much, Y/N. I’ve missed you.”

“I’ve missed you, too.” You said staring at Brendan like he was playing a joke on you and at any moment he was going to tell you he was joking.

“Can we try again? Maybe start over and see where things went wrong? Maybe with dinner tomorrow night?” he said hopeful. You knew that he was the one for you and you knew that he was the only one who could make you happy. You weren’t going to let him go again.

“I’d like that a lot.” You said as you brought your drink to your lips and smiled at him over the rim of your cup.
