Caylie POV
I wake up in a few hours later, due to Jack's snores. At least I got a little bit of sleep after all of that.... ugh, went on. Well, I have learned a lot from that experience. First of all, I hate Seth. That flag is back up. Second of all, Grace didn't like Seth that much. Or else she wouldn't have rejected him. Third of all, Seth is a really bad kisser. His tactics were very bad. He only kissed my cheek but still. I can tell. I take a deep breath. I have to put the events of this morning behind me, because it's going to be a long walk home and we really can't afford to take more time due to arguing. I decide on the spot not to mention this to anyone, and hopefully nobody will find out. I don't think I could stand the others taunts, even if they are just teasing me. Man, I hate that boy.As I get up, I see that almost everybody else is. Seth seems to be still asleep. Good. I don't even have to try to avoid him that way. The only other person is Jack. He seems to be groggily making his way back to us, but it'll take time. Hovering over him is Kate, whom looks rather nervous. Probably the sick thrill of yesterday. As we all get ourselves ready to go out and about, back to town, the more I think about it, something seems weird.
What attacked Jack? Or who? I just can't think of why it would hurt him and leave us. It's just not like most of the things here, denying healthy people who could use a good attack. Or poisoning. Or nightmare? What or whoever it was, it did a fairly good job at harming him. Luckily, not bad enough that he didn't have a week. That's the strange thing with all of these attacks. None of us were killed in a minute or two. Kate didn't get hurt, except for her wrists I guess. They looked burnt. Was that supposed to represent something? I don't know.. Mental health? Because she's seemed shaky since the incident. Not her usual self. She's usually peppy and a little crazy. But not nervous.
I shake the thought and go to see the girl in question. She's still looking at Jack, checking his bandages. When she looks up I'm standing by her side. A curios expression is sliding onto her face. It's... A mix between confusion and fear. Something's wrong.
"Kate," I say "Spill." She takes a deep breath and stretches out her arms in front of her, and flexes her fingers shaking her head.
"I have been wrong a few times. With you, and now I think with Jack." Kate starts, "I think I over estimated with him. Yesterday he seemed very damaged, but you know, fixable. Today he..." She stops and looks at her still red wrists.
"I could be wrong you know. But... He looks worse than yesterday. I don't know if he has about a week. Looking at his wounds, I'd say... A day or two tops. I'm sorry!" she adds, looking very concerned and guilty. I make a strangled noise and put my palms to my face.
I thought we had gotten out of this part! Once we found Jack, I thought we were home free. We aren't supposed to have any more problems! Going back should be easier than coming here... Then again, I think of what Seth said. 'If we could make it there.' Such a simple statement, but not so simple. Of course, the problems can't be over. They've only just begun. And I really hope we get home before they really get moving.
I take in a deep breath.
"You know what to do," I say, looking over at Alex, who is trying to tie something together. I wait for Kate to move, but she doesn't. Kind of confused, I stare at her. Kate narrows her eyes, and gives a half glance to Alex.
"Please." she pleads, "I really don't want to do it myself. Not again. I don't like bearing bad news. Will you- will you come with me?" she finishes, looking down at me. I sigh. If that's really what she wants... But it's not what she'd usually want. Back home, before this all happened, she'd just want to get it over with. Alone. This is yet another change I've noticed in her. She doesn't like to be alone any more.
