At Last My search for freedom did not go unrewarded; And for that I was glad.
When your father finished taking my vitals for the day, I watched him turn to leave. As he strode away from me And out the door, I stood And caught it Before it could fully close And lock me inside.
Freedom. I could practically taste its sweetness on my tongue. Slowly, Soundlessly I peeked out into the barren hallway And, Seeing not a soul, Slipped out of my prison.
My heart thundered in my chest So loudly That I feared someone would hear me And come running out to capture me Yet again.
But I couldn't let that happen; I didn't have the time.
I had you to save.
Still without letting A single word Slide from my lips I dashed down other hallways Hiding in janitorial closets At the sound of people Coming my way.
It took an eternity, But after all my struggle I finally found the exit.
Not even bothering To hide the joyful grin on my face, I snuck into a nearby office Borrowed a key card And swiped it through The slot at the door.
Click.
The door opened, and I stared in awe At the darkening sky before me.
Stars loomed above Like happy tears From angels above. Tears from strangers. Tears from my friends. Tears from my mother. It was like a wondrous dream that I feared waking up from As I stepped into the comforting cloak Of darkness Finally inhaling The frigid night.
