Eyes Wide Open I had reached the quarantine A hulking building Towering over me, An insignificant man Against a menacing, singular enemy. The place was an unforgiving prison If nothing else.
I stumbled to its doors, The wide open maw Of a plague-ridden monster And warily stepped inside.
The doors were not locked And stood wide open Which puzzled me, But I did not think much of it. More pressing matters Inhabited my thoughts.
I didn't have time To consider why No one had hindered me from entering The waiting beast Nor why no one tried to stop me As I wondered through the rows of glass cubicles In search for my Hope.
I hurried Like there was a rapid, Malicious, THING Chasing after me. I couldn't lose you, Not again. Not after all we'd been through.
I didn't know how much time I had left, If any, So I ran.
I ran like the end was near; I didn't want the end to come.
It was not until I stopped to catch my breath That I realized Every single patient I'd passed Was dead.
My eyes were ready to pop out of their sockets As I raced down the next isle of cubicles And the next, And the next.
All of their prisoners were dead, Blood pouring From various wounds Their eyes wide open.
I could only hope That you hadn't met the same fate.
