Chapter 42: Memories

"Ren-kun, promise me you'll come back to play with me again okay?" Maki held my hand as she spoke

"Don't worry Maki-chan, I will. I promise I won't be gone that long. Once I get back, I'll come back and play with you again"

"All those memories from the past is slowly coming back to me now. What the hell happened to me? Why I can't remember anything after that? Why?"

Suddenly I felt dizzy and fainted probably from all what happened the whole day.

"Ren! Wake up! What happened to you? Ren!" A voice kept calling me, trying to wake me up

I slowly opened my eyes, it was Maki who's trying to wake me up.

"Maki? What are you doing here?"

"Huh? Did you forget? We were supposed to continue what we all left of last night" Maki replied

"I see"

"I haven't came up with an idea yet, maybe we should-"
"Maki, I want to clear something up" I stopped her from talking and showed her the photo I found last night

"This picture. I can't actually remember all the details but I'm quite sure that's us."

Maki turned her head down and stayed silent

"I remembered some details last night but most of it is still foggy. Did something happened back then?"

Maki stayed down and quiet. Its like she doesn't want to answer

"I understand. If you feel like telling the details, just talk to me."

She started sobbing

"Maki, are you okay? Why are you-"

She didn't let me finish and she just slapped me in the face

"W-what was that for!?"

"After all those years, you only remembered it just now? You promised me that you'll come back but you never did. I waited for a long time until I just gave up on it. When I saw you at school, I thought you'll remember me but you didn't. I tried to make you remember but you didn't. And you ended up being with Umi and still you haven't remembered anything what we've been through!" Maki replied angrily

"Maki I'm sorry, but I really-"

"Forget it! That's where you're good at anyway!" Maki stood up and took her bag. In the front door, Honoka and Umi just arrived and saw her about to leave

"You can also forget about trying to help me. I'll accept my dad's transfer plan so I won't bother you all anymore" Maki quickly left the house

Honoka and Umi came in and tried to calm me down

"Ren, are you okay? What happened?" Umi asked but I didn't responded and kept my head on the ground

"Why did Maki-chan got angry?" Honoka asked as well

"Please leave me alone just for now"

"But-" Honoka tried to speak

"I SAID LEAVE NOW"

They both got shocked

"I'm sorry but I need time to be alone for now. Tell the others to continue your plans at Honoka's house instead"

"I understand. Let me know when you need something" Umi replied and both of them left

I stayed in my room whole day, staring at the photo trying to remember. Until I didn't realize I fell asleep.

"1, 2, 3 ready or not here I come!"

We play hide and seek a lot before. Usually, I always let her find me easily like hiding in obvious areas so she won't cry a lot since she hate losing.

One day, she gave me a pocket notebook as a birthday gift. I used it as a diary and to list some stuff I want to do along with her.

I woked up and its now around night time.

"The diary! Where did I keep it?"

I kept searching my room for it but its not there.

"Not here. Probably in the attic"

I went to the attic to find it. Good thing Dad still haven't threw all of the stuff here. I can still see the first bicycle I got when I was young just sitting in the corner.

Its been an hour but I still haven't found it yet. I noticed a small box close to the window. I dusted it off and opened it. The diary is there along with some medical papers

I opened my diary and read it

July 10 20**
Maki-chan gave me this notebook as a birthday present. I'm really happy she gave me this and I will cherish it with my life

July 15 20**
Maki-chan and I sneaked out to her house to play in the arcade nearby. I got a cat plush toy from the claw machine and gave it to her. She's really happy when I gave it to her. When we got back, we got scolded by one of their maids. But I guess it was worth it. Seeing her smile is what matters

August 4 20**
My dad wants me to come with him to live in Nagoya for a year because of the job he got there. I went to Maki-chan's house to tell her about that. She didn't want me to go at first but in the end, we promised that we will see each other again

After that, few of the pages are not written by me. The next pages was my mom's writing.

Son, if you are reading this, I assume your memory started to return now and this diary is the first thing you will find. On the day you went to Nagoya with your father, you got hit by a car and hospitalized for months. When you woke up, the doctor said you got an amnesia. At first I couldn't accept it, but I insisted and helped you remember us. When you recovered, we returned back here in Tokyo and continued to help you recover your memories, but there's nothing we can do because you never tell us anything about yourself, your friends, or places you go everyday. If there's anything we can do to help, just tell us and we'll do whatever we can. I pray that you can find the answer you're looking for.

Tears started to fall in my eyes after reading everything mom wrote.
"Amnesia? That's what happened? How stupid can I be?" I punched the wall in front of me out of frustration.

I went outside and ran to Maki's house.
