MAEVE DIDN'T REALLY LIKE THE SMELL OF MEDICINE. It was the gross but familiar smell of a typical hospital. She woke up to find Bucky beside her, asleep. He had been holding her hand with his, and he kept the metal one tucked away on his lap as he was dozing off. She smiled and ran her fingers through his freshly cut, chestnut hair. Maeve would never get tired to doing that, it gave her a calm sensation whenever she touched his hair. She watched as his eyes fluttered open to look at her.

"Maeve! You're awake!" He exclaimed in bewilderment, "I want to hug you so bad right now but you're probably sore all over so-" Bucky's rambling was cut off by Sam clearing his throat, catching both of their attention. Scott peered behind Sam's shoulder in curiosity, though he didn't want to seem like he cared all that much about Maeve.

"We're glad you're doing okay, Maeve. You should rest, we'll tell you the details about what happened when you're feeling better."

"No-" Said Maeve, groaning in pain as she sat up a little. Bucky quickly propped a pillow against the headboard so that she would be more comfortable. "I'm fine. I just wanna know what happened with that alien chick."

Sam chuckled at her words and he sat down on a chair that leaned against the ice cold wall. "Her name is Seraphina, she's a banished Kree warrior that wants your powers. She has somehow controlled the aliens, the ones that are hungry for your energy. Since you're-" Sam stopped himself and widened his eyes, almost revealing the secret they were keeping from her. Maeve tilted her head to the side in confusion.

"Since I'm what?"

Scott rested a hand on Sam's shoulder, speaking for him, "Since you're very...powerful! Don't worry, Maeve, we've got this under control. We have her location and Captain Marvel's on her way to capture her."

Maeve shook her head and protested, "What? No! I want to be the one to find her!" She wanted to kill the so-called Kree warrior for injuring her greatly. Bucky scowled at her brash decisions and careless ideal.

"Doll, you look like hell."

"Thanks, I came back." She snapped, crossing her arms angrily.

"As much as I hate to say it, Barnes is right. We can't risk losing you, and you're not exactly in the best state to fight either." Scott added, he didn't really want Maeve to be fighting again, especially after he witnessed Seraphina almost drain the life out of her. The first part of what he said had earned him a glare from a certain metal-armed soldier.

"That's bullshit! I'll be fine in like a couple of days, guys. It's not a big deal, and I'm not a baby!"

Maeve also had another reason as to why she wanted to look for Seraphina herself. She never really knew her heritage, and she was wondering if Seraphina would know, since the first time they met, the alien warrior had a strong sense of familiarity before, like she had seen her somewhere.

"Maeve, you can't go and that's final!" Bucky snapped. Maeve was startled by his sudden outburst, he had never yelled at her like that. Bucky immediately felt bad as he looked at her reaction. He looked down at his lap and muttered out a small 'sorry.' Sam got up from his chair and Scott opened the door.

"We're sorry Maeve, there's nothing we can do," Sam mumbled out, he looked at her in pity and she laid on her hospital bed, silent and lost in thought. The two men shut the door behind them and walked away.

Maeve refused to look at Bucky, she didn't like getting yelled at, especially by people who she cared about. She stopped the tears from stinging her eyes as she looked down with her arms crossed.

"Is there really nothing you can do?" She asked, a glimmer of hope in her eyes. Bucky knew what all this was about, she wanted to find out who her parents really were. He shook his head, "Maeve - you don't need to know who your family is, you've got us." Maeve glared at him, "No. You don't get to say that! You don't know how it feels to never know who your parents truly were!" She sat up even higher, her eyes on the same level as to how he was sitting. She stared at him dead in the eye, as if she was challenging him.

"I don't want you to get hurt. You've only been in this hero business for about a few weeks! You don't know what it's like." He countered. Still, she looked at him dead in the eye, unfazed.

"I am going to find out who my parents are and you can't stop me."

"You're part alien!" Bucky exclaimed. Upon looking at her shocked face, her mouth open, eyes as wide as china plates, he knew he made a big mistake. Bucky shut his gaping mouth with his metal hand, he wanted to punch himself in the face as he truly processed the importance of his error.

"I'm a what...?"

Bucky sighed, there was no turning back now.

"Your genes have a part of them. We don't know if it was your mother or your father but Bruce thinks it's from your mother."

"Wait 'WE'? Who else knows?!" Maeve was growing angrier by the second, all she ever wanted in her entire life was to know who she really was. She was always in an identity crisis, learning that she was an alien did not help. It made matters way worse.

"Um...Bruce knows, Sam knows, Scott - kinda knows," Bucky recalled, voice shaky and uncertain.

"I-it's not true! I'm not an alien." She replied, tears threatening to spill. Bucky tried to hold her hand to calm her down, but she flinched, yanking it away. It tore his heart in two to be rejected like that.

"I'm sorry I had to tell you like this. But look, doll, on the bright side, you're the first being in this universe to be half Kree - half human! You're one of a kind. " He urged, forcing a smile trying to make her feel better. He knew he didn't because he saw her melancholic expression and saw the tears streaming down her cheeks. This was really the first time he had seen Maeve cry, out of pure undivided sadness. It shattered him. She refused to look at him, and she turned her head to the other side and close her eyes, hoping the tears would stop.

"You don't know how alone that makes me feel."
