The veil
by Zamzam Ahmed
———————————————I was 5 years old
When I wore the veil
6 years old when I began to pray
A small little thing I was
My parents pride and joy
I was 14 years old
When I began to question
If my veil was worn for God, or because of others suggestions
I was 16 years old
When I took it off at school
I didn't feel naked, for once it was my own body I ruled
I am 17 years old
And I just posted my first picture without the hijab
Others comments a constant stab
I will be 20 something
When I put on my veil
For the last time, against my lord your words will always hold pale
