Virgil was mad at himself.
Yeah, no surprise there.
He was sitting anxiously waiting at a table for two in a small restaurant, bouncing his knee and praying to whatever force in the universe wanted to help him that he wouldn't have to tell another waiter that he was waiting for someone.
Virgil couldn't blame his date, really. It wasn't exactly fair of Virgil to expect him to show up to their dinner half an hour early. Why was Virgil here half an hour early? Well.
Virgil's friends Logan and Roman has gotten together through a blind date, and they'd encouraged Virgil to do the same. He'd spoken briefly with the person over text message, and he seemed nice enough. But Virgil had no clue what to expect. All of the added stress made him show up really early, knowing that he wanted to make a good first impression.
The hard part about the blind date is that Virgil hadn't the faintest idea what this guy looked like. So every single person who walked into the restaurant was a suspect, and Virgil watched them as they got seated, both hoping they were the one, so he didn't have to sit here any longer.... and wanting them to stay as far away from him as humanly possible.
"Um... excuse me."
God damn these waiters. He hated interactions with small talk and was tired of trying to convince them that he was fine to wait.
When he turned to talk to him, however, Virgil noticed that it wasn't a waiter at all, but a young man. He was wearing black glasses that were too big for him, and made him look both goofy... and kind of adorable. He had a grey cardigan on over a blue button-up shirt, and dark pants. His freckles added to the mix made him look a little childish. But it was, in its own way, charming.
"I'm here for a blind date, and because of that I have to ask around to see if I can find him." The guy said. "Are you who I'm here to see?"
Virgil's heart immediately started beating, like, seven times faster. "I-I guess. Hi."
"Hi!" The guy looked relieved, and sat down across from Virgil with a welcoming grin. "Sorry for being a little late, I could not find my keys for the life of me."
"Don't worry about it." Virgil said dryly, his shoulders tense from nervousness.
They ordered drinks, and the other man started up a cheerful pleasant conversation. He told Virgil all about his plans to get a new puppy, which made Virgil smile at how excited he was about it. He made jokes and told comics stories, that actually got genuine laughs from Virgil.
Virgil began to relax a bit, settling into the flow of conversation. This guy sure talked a lot. But, honestly? Virgil didn't mind in the slightest. He was actually really happy that he didn't have to feel the pressure of trying to keep up his end of the conversation, and his date was actually pretty fun to talk to.
After their dinner came, Virgil became more comfortable with speaking up. Now they were having a full, lengthy conversation that was only interrupted by their random spouts of laughter.
Maybe this wasn't so bad.
"We should get going." The glasses-adorned man said.
"What, why?" Virgil said, internally panicking at thinking he'd said something wrong.
"Didn't you say we were going to go see your brother's show tonight?"
Virgil set down his fork. "I don't... have a brother." He said lowly.
The other paused. "I'm sorry... are you Remy?"
Virgil slowly shook his head, as what was happening dawned on him. "You're not Emile, are you?"
"No, I'm not. My name is Patton." The guy said.
"I'm Virgil." Virgil introduced himself.
"Oh my goodness!" Patton said. "I think we got our dates mixed up!"
Patton looked around the restaurant for a moment, craning his neck, before spotting something, and ducking his head back down. "Virgil, I think our dates are over there." He said, pointing over to a man in a leather jacket and sunglasses babbling animatedly to another guy in tortoise-shell glasses and a pink tie.
They looked at each other, wide eyed.
Before bursting out into giggles.
"Come on, come on!" Patton whispered, even though they were well out of ear shot. "Let's get out of here before they see us!"
Patton waved over a passing waiter. They payed quickly, before Patton took Virgil's hand and pulled him out of the restaurant as stealthily as they could. Though they weren't that stealthy, as they were tiptoeing in the most obvious way, and giggling furiously the whole way.
Okay wow that was kind of long whoops
